A recent article on men.style.com, "The 600 Club", suggests some cool American-made goods to buy with your tax rebate. The idea is: spending your money will stimulate the economy, but spending it on American-made goods will keep the money in the U.S. and increase the value of the dollar.

SCANDINAVIAN DESIGNERS IN HUgE MAY 2008

This May issue of the Japanese men's fashion magazine HUgE has a great feature on many Scandinavian designers, including a handful which are carried here at Blackbird. Below is a translation of the ones we have at the store. As usual, these are rough translations so the designers' words should not be taken literally.

The first section, "about a Scandinavian's Movement" gives six designers a set of six questions to answer. Below are the questions followed by the answers from the designers carried at Blackbird.

"1.What is the brand's concept?
2.What is the theme of the 08S/S collection? What was the image of the collection? What is the most recommended item in the collection?
3. What is the most important concept for making your design?
4. What inspires you when you design?
5. In Japan, fashion from Scandinavia is very trendy now. What is the most admirable thing about Scandinavian fashion?
6. What kind of idea do you have about Japan as fashion market and style?"

Acne Jeans

"Advertisement company "Acne Creative" made one hundred denim jeans for their clients and friends. The popularity was immediately apparent and lead creative director Jonny Johanson to launch the brand officially in 1997. Since the beginning, they have won all the major Swedish fashion awards.

1. Acne Jeans is for someone who wears clothing and represents the characteristics and style of the brand. All of the items of the collection has a specific concept but the wearer can comfortably mix the items with other brands.
2. In this season, we are took inspiration from the English adventurer of the African savanna in the great photographer Peter Beard's creation" Hunter with a camera for a gun."
3. We think quality, material, design, comfort, and stability are most important.
4. Subculture that is different from fashion. We have to identify subculture as new fashion so we always have an interest in it.
5. We are a growing brand in this Scandinavian fashion boom so I don't think we are supposed to answer, however, all of the Scandinavian brands have succeeded to mix design and comfort.
6. I like Japanese fashion such as Yohji Yamamoto, Commes des Garcon, Undercover and Number (N)ine. We consider the Japanese market as a big challenge for us to overcome."

Julian Red

"In 2002, Mattias Lind started the brand in Gotenborg, Sweden. They started to make jeans and in 2003, the collection finally started officially. They named the brand after a character in Bret Easton Ellis's novel "Less Than Zero."

1. Our concept is a psychological design balanced with futuristic looks when you actually wear our clothing. Our brand is avant-garde and tends to be very sensitive for fashion movements. We try to improve our quality of material and tailoring techniques.
2. For the 08S/S collection, the main inspiration is Amedee Ozenfant, Le Corbusier and the starting of purism. We needed to find a way to back to the basic concepts of clothing such as they were working.
3. To illustrate the confusion on one's mind.
4. We think inspiration is to find a very nuance from life, art, society, music and fashion and to illustrate, or make a comparison. Our work is very conceptual. Our work comes from a development of emotions and objections.
5. First, we are good at making visual concepts to present ourselves. Also, like Japanese brands, we care very small details that contribute to the overall fit and design.
6. We have respect for Yohji Yamamoto. Japansese consumers are much more motivated about fashion than consumers in Europe or America."

Following the question section is "departure from Scandinavia" which goes on to give brief bios for eleven more brands, including Blackbird old time favourite Filippa K and one of the newer brands to the store, Pudel.

"This brand has been leading the Scandinavian fashion scene for a very long time. For 08S/S they took inspiration from American army classic styles after the WW2. The collection has a masculine look which mixes good old American trad style with relaxed elegance."

Pudel

"The designer Lina Osterman graduated from London's Saint Martins College of Art & Design. Pudel started in 2005A/W and took base in London. Unlike other Scandinavians brands, this brand provides genderless clothing with a minimal and clean style. Its very original concept is attracting many buyers from London and Japan."

DETAILS: Absolutely stunning! Every detail of these boots contributes to them being like nothing you will see again. The official color is listed as dark brown but it is such an interesting shade which in some areas appears almost as a very deep purple. Just by handling these you can really see such a huge amount of hand workings which went into them, including the nailed inner and outer soles, incredible stacked heel, and dye processing.

VARONIQUE NICHANIAN IN DETAILS MAGAZINE

Varonique Nichanian, menswear designer for Hermes, gave Details magazine 10 great pieces of wisdom regarding men's style and clothing. We can't say it any better, so here are her 10 tips straight from the article "Follow the Rules: Varonique Nichanian".


1. The right proportion and fit are a matter of centimeters—millimeters, really. When you choose clothes that are perfect for you, you feel strong, comfortable, and more self-confident.

2. Style is a question of charm, not nationality. It’s not true that French men have more allure or style than American men. It’s just that they dress with more personality. They don’t follow dress codes, and sometimes they mix things in a way they shouldn’t. Like how Serge Gainsbourg dressed, with his reptile shoes with jeans and blazer and white shirt—that’s charm.

3. For a weekend away, a man should bring a simple shirt, two cashmere sweaters, three polos, and one pair of jeans. For shoes, either sandals or light leather moccasins—just the essentials.

4. In relationships, you must show proof of love and do something passionate. I once had a boyfriend fly from New York to Paris just to have dinner with me. It was very smart.

5. Age is not important. A man, no matter if he’s 20 or 60, can wear a tee and jeans if he has the right body.

6. You should have one watch for the weekend, one for the week, one for suits, one for sport. I love watches. Watches are for men what perfume is for women. They are very personal, and you can wear them according to your mood.

7. Wearing a scarf is about attitude. A man should just wrap one around his neck, maybe two times—but not tightly like women do. It should be nonchalant.

8. Men make a mistake when they follow fashion instead of their own personality or their own body. When they dress in a very slim shape even if they don’t have the right body, it’s all wrong. It’s awful. With my husband, I tell him, ‘Stay yourself and I’ll take care of you.’ He’s the most spoiled man in Paris.

9. You can never have too many cashmere sweaters. There are so many kinds of fits and colors. You should have a lightweight one for summer and a heavier one for winter. Whether you wear darker colors like navy or brighter ones like green or yellow can depend on the way you wake up.

10. The most timeless article of clothing a man can have is a leather piece. An Hermès leather bomber.

PUDEL BLACK JEANS

We received several new items from "Scandinavian yet London-based" Pudel's spring/summer collection, but first up for display are these great coated black raw jeans. They are a great slim tapered fit with low front rise and long yoke in the back which is perfect to wear low on the hips or higher up on the waist. The first thing you may notice in the pictures are the cool minor details along the belt line -- a zip pocket on the left-hand side is perfect for a cell phone while the ring on the back right side is handy for keys or a wallet chain. The inky texture of the denim is also quite nice!

Endovanera Opens Front St.

Can you imagine a design studio in a boathouse? Endovanera, one of Blackbird's new brands this season, started out making custom designs out of a boathouse, but have recently upgraded to a new studio/showroom in LA. Models Wanted

Have you ever considered a hobby in modeling?

Blackbird is looking for volunteer male models for photo shoots and runway events.

Requirements:
-at least 5' 11"
-trim or lean physique; no overly muscular body types
-comfortable in front of the camera
-confident runway walk

Auditions will be held Monday April 7th and Tuesday April 8th
from 4:00 - 6:00 pm at our office

Spring Field Trip!

With the sun shining bright in Ballard this morning, a Spring field trip was in order. We decided to take a few of Spring's new arrivals out to Golden Gardens Park and introduce them to one of Ballard's favorite spots overlooking the Puget Sound.

DIET BUTCHER SLIM SKIN 2ND DELIVERY

The second delivery from Japan's great Diet Butcher Slim Skin is here! Most of what we had gotten in the first delivery flew out the door, so be sure to be on top of this delivery. From the first delivery we have left only a single pair of the black "Stone Bio Wash" jeans in size 1 (approximately a size 28) so please also let us know if you are interested in those.

Be on the look out for further deliveries which will include shoes, boots, sneakers, slim pants, and a couple other tops. The f/w08-09 collection will be presented later this month and I for one cannot wait to see what they come up with.

Oversized cotton/linen knit vest in black ($895)
This was the specific piece that had us all drooling when we saw photos of it in the season's catalog, and the final product does not at all disappoint. It is made from a super chunky and rigid cotton/linen blend that is unlike anything else. The placement of the heavy metal buttons works perfectly to allow for many different wearing styles and the belt can be tied to allow for a slim or more oversized look. This piece works perfectly on both men or women.

Looks like someone is knocking off Common Projects by creating fakes and selling them to unsuspecting folks. The pictures below came from a listing on eBay and if you click on the image you can definitely tell the quality is poor. I confirmed with CP that they are not real. BEWARE THE FAKES!
