WINGS+HORNS FALL/WINTER 2008 TIGER FLEECE

The famous wings+horns Tiger Fleece hoodies are back in the shop! Tiger Fleece has become a signature item in the wings+horns fall/winter collections and each time we get a shipment we fall in love all over again. The outer portion has a beautiful recognizable speckled color while the inside is lined with an absurdly soft fleece all throughout the body and sleeves. Get one on and you will never want to take it off! This season introduces some subtle stylistic changes, as well as the reintroduction of fan-favourite riri zippers.

The hoodies come in two fit styles; slim and classic, which can be described as follows..
  • Slim - This style can be perfect for many body types, including women. The size small is approximately a size US36 and in this style, the arms are cut snugly with high armholes up top.
  • Classic - The classic sweatshirt fit we have all grown up with. Great for guys who prefer clothes to not be super tight, as well as the bigger folks. A size small is approximately a 38.

WHY I AM MOVING TO MAINE

Speaking of Maine, my best friend Jay from Rogues Gallery has started a blog that's pretty darn fantastic. PTLDME.com contains life and fashion from a uniquely desolate and worldly perspective. Ford F150 trucks, kitchen witches, Japanese fashion, battleships and some behind the scenes with Rogues Gallery. All it needs now is a little Stevie Nicks and we're set. Congratulations Jay!

KZO SS09 RUNWAY PREVIEW

We're so impressed with Joel Knoernschild and his SS2009 collection for KZO! To us, Joel's garments are completely original with their mix of So. Cal skate/surf/bike culture influences fighting against modern industrial high fashion. Nearly everything is made is Japan and of a very high quality. The details are thoughtful, subtle and fun. This is a line to watch.

WAY TO GO GQ

It's not often that I find a fashion magazine displaying anything close to authentic. The October issue of GQ hit the mark with their MAINE MAN feature. It's completely believable, wearable and relevant. Outstanding work.

UNHOLY MATRIMONY "SEASONS OF NON" AT BLACKBIRD

Unholy Matrimony's "SEASONS OF NON" installation opened last Saturday to a very warm reception. Brett Westfall and his friends spent the latter part of the week scouring our neighborhood for objects and culture. All objects were carried by foot back to the shop before being cleaned, painted, and assembled. This piece will remain with us until February 28th 2009.

This installation displays Unholy Matrimony's current collection which includes BALLARD print t-shirts, cropped pants, various shirt styles, accessories, and more. This collection is being sold exclusively at the Comme des Garcons Guerilla Store in Los Angeles which Brett co-owns, as well as here at Blackbird through this installation. Shown below is a large portion of what we have in stock right now. More photos will follow of both items from the collection, as well as more of the installation and party.

'SEASONS of NON'

'Seasons of Non'
A Blackbird Shop-in-Shop by Unholy Matrimony's Brett Westfall.

This October will bring the union of Blackbird and Unholy Matrimony in the form of a shop-in-shop, a conceptual installation. Brett Westfall, Comme des Garcons collaborator and L.A based artist/designer, will construct a free form installation within Blackbird where his Unholy Matrimony collection will be sold through February 2009. The collection is entitled 'Seasons of Non' and is based on Brett's concept of 'questioning the real in reality'. What this means, we hope to discover on Saturday, Oct 25th, when the shop opens and our friends gather to celebrate and take in the happenings.

Opening - October 25, 2008
Beer and wine will be served from 7:00-9:00pm

Installation runs from October 25th thru Feb 28th

Designer background:

Unholy Matrimony was conceived in 2002 by artist Brett Westfall and launched in 2003 with the idea of combining conceptual art and fashion design. He recently collaborated with Comme des Garcons's Rei Kawakubo on the new CDG Homme Plus line, which debuted as part of the Comme des Garcons Spring 09 runway collection during Paris fashion week. Brett is also co-owner of the CDG +1 213 Guerilla Store, the first American Comme des Garcons store, located in Los Angeles.

CLASSIC SEATTLE (BUT REALLY OLYMPIA): BEAT HAPPENING

Coincidentally, just days ago I was trying to find some excuse to post a Beat Happening video. Probably something about how cool cardigans are, how K Records t-shirts are appearing in at select shops in Tokyo and in magazines, or that the recent beautiful weather here in Seattle seems quite like an Indian summer. While I thought and considered, Nicole seemed to beat me to it.

BLACKBIRD NATURAL LEATHER FOOTWEAR BY ESQUIVEL

We had been communicating back and forth with Los Angeles-based shoemaker George Esquivel with some ideas for custom footwear and, to go along with our already strong appreciation for raw denim and other aging products, we found it very fitting to go forward with a boot made from completely natural, untanned leather. These boots and shoes have been a long time coming and we are very happy to have a final product to show to our customers.

As with all Esquivel shoes, these are completely hand made down in the USA in a process which takes over one hundred steps to complete followed by another two weeks to allow for each shoe to dry naturally on their last/mold to ensure that they perfectly retain their shape. Due to the easily manipulative nature of this natural leather, each of these steps has become a white glove process from start to finish to lessen the possibility of marks on the shoes previous to purchase.

The natural leather comes from a tannery in Norway which has remained family run since the late 1800s and supplies leathers for luxury houses around the world. This leather has had only a neutral color cream applied and is, as mentioned above, otherwise purely natural. Each pair is going to age and darken through wear, exposure to sunlight, and overall how they are treated by the wearer. Within weeks no two pairs are going to look anything alike!

If the wearer prefers the clean "nude" look of the natural leather, we recommend a neutral color wax to be applied prior to wear. This will help keep away dirt as you wear them. Otherwise, The shoes will be quick to take in wear and dirt to become unique to the wearer.

Both styles use McKay Construction (the patent of which was purchased by Gordon McKay from cobbler and inventor Lyman Blake), or stitch down construction. This construction method helps create a comfortable and easy to wear aesthetic which, along with the cork midsole, will break into the wearer's foot within days.

These shoes are available only at Blackbird!

... and onto the photos!

The Scion, the Stitch, and the Wardrobe

Big thanks to Blackbird's Man-at-Large Ari Seth Cohen for finding this 2007 Vanity Fair web exclusive article by Gay Talese regarding suits, suiting and economics and joys of fine tailored clothing. I am copying this article and it's photos directly from Vanity Fair so all credit is theirs. Enjoy!

The Scion, the Stitch, and the Wardrobe

by Gay Talese WEB EXCLUSIVE August 27, 2007

Custom-tailored suits, with their carefully sculptured contours and other personalized details, have become a rarity over the last half-century. The author, a noted clotheshorse who was named to this year's International Best-Dressed List, bemoans the decline of this intimate craft, which was mastered by several generations of his male ancestors, including his father.

There are people who are greatly concerned about the environment and the well-being of Bengal tigers and yellow-headed Amazon parrots. And then there are people like me who worry about the professional survival of men's custom tailors. Each year I spend large sums of money in shops that employ these craftsmen, whom I see as an endangered species.

I have personally witnessed the economic decline and diminution of tailors, because my late father was one of them. An "artist with a needle and thread" is how I remember him. His occupational pride was rarely enriched by a sufficient number of customers to make his endeavors worthwhile, and thus most of our family's income during my Jersey-shore boyhood was derived from a flourishing dress boutique founded by my sociable and commercially minded mother. Still, I have fond recollections of my father's shop as it existed half a century ago: the bolts of exquisite fabric on the counters; the dressing rooms with red velvet curtains and three-sided mirrors; the framed posters of elegantly attired men wearing homburgs and fedoras, suits with pocket handkerchiefs, and overcoats with boutonniered buttonholes. Some of the men in the posters carried walking sticks; they were boulevardiers strolling through the streets of Paris, a city my father first came to know in 1920 during his stay as a 17-year-old apprentice eager to refine the tailoring skills he had begun learning after school in an uncle's shop in his native Italy.

My father made most of my suits during my school years through college. There had been tailors in his background for five generations, beginning in the early 1800s. His ancestors (and mine) dwelled in hillside villages and towns in the rugged mountains of Southern Italy, where there existed, especially among bride-seeking bachelors, a desire to wear fine clothes and create a favorable impression on young ladies. In the early evenings, these traditionally shy women stood watching within the shadows of residential balconies overlooking the main square, where crowds of men gathered to smoke and converse among themselves and sometimes walk around in pairs, arm in arm, in what was both a courtship ritual and an exhibition of masculine fashion.

In this early-20th-century setting, known as the passeggiata, the local tailors competed with one another to showcase their sartorial talents. Collectively they refined a particular style of dress in accord with the inherent vanity of Italian men, many of whom lived in quite modest circumstances. Indeed, in this part of Italy, where poverty was prevalent, there was an overwhelming interest in appearances; dressing up was a strategy for elevating one's public image. Making a good impression—fare la bella figura—was inbred in the culture, and engaging the services of a talented tailor was one of the simplest ways to get noticed. This may explain why so many of the outstanding tailors in Europe and the United States were either born in Southern Italy or influenced by the region's individualistic and rather rakish mode of male attire. While the English tailors of Savile Row produced clothing that bespoke an understated elegance, there was nothing understated about the work of the Italians: it suggested a demonstrative spirit, an emboldened nature, a desire to elicit the attention of young women on balconies. Most prominently, the Italian style was characterized by embroidered buttonholes and decorative stitching or piping along the edges of the lapels and down the outer seams of the trousers. In contrast to the slope-shouldered suits produced by the English, the Italians favored broad, slightly raised shoulders as well as colorful silk linings that could be glimpsed through the double vents at the back of the jackets.

It was in Paris that I developed a sophisticated appreciation of the tailor's art. During a trip there in the mid-1950s, on furlough from a U.S. military base in Germany, I visited an older cousin of my father's named Antonio Cristiani, who had left Italy for France in 1911 and operated a very successful shop near the Paris opera house on the Rue de la Paix. From that first tour of Cristiani's showroom I became a devotee of his suits, and in the ensuing years, as I gradually earned enough money from my writing to afford being a customer, I was fitted for dozens of them, each one costing between $2,500 and $3,000—even with my family discount. But I've always been able to justify this spending, as I alluded to earlier, because I see myself as helping to underwrite the continued existence of an endangered species of craftsmen who produce handstitched apparel. Whenever I purchase yet another suit, I remind myself that the money I'm spending would buy another man a new set of golf clubs. (I don't play golf.) Moreover, my entire wardrobe—between 80 and 90 suits from such distinguished names as Brioni, Zegna, Smalto, DiMitri, Battaglia, and Meledandri, as well as Cristiani—would hardly match the purchase price of any one of the 40-foot motor yachts I see in such abundance whenever I cross a bridge near my summer home in Ocean City, New Jersey.

Yet it seems impertinent to make financial comparisons when what I'm mainly interested in is the aesthetics of the tailoring profession, and my small part within it as a patron, a preservationist, and an advocate of the perfect fit—and the idea that measurements can alter the mind. A large percentage of the suits I wear are 20, 30, even 40 years old, and they are mostly representative of the classic 1930s style, my favorite period. But they are never out of fashion, since these clothes set their own fashion. There are double-breasted and single-breasted suits—both with waistcoats in some cases—and they have high pointed lapels or rounded lapels of a unique cut that sets them apart. They are dateless in a sense and, because they are carefully crafted, are long-lasting. If something I like is damaged or beyond repair—such as a Paris-made Smalto jacket stained by my ink pen—I have the jacket copied by a tailor I know in New York, and thus it lives on in thread and fabric. Since I like holding on to my clothes, however, it is important that I not gain weight. I have kept my weight at pretty much the same for nearly a half-century, meaning I work out a lot and try to stay away from ice cream.

Putting on a beautifully designed suit elevates my spirit, extols my sense of self, and helps define me as a man to whom details matter. Well-tailored clothing is a celebration of precision. When I'm wearing one of my custom suits, I'm in harmony with my highest ideals, my worship of great workmanship. In this period of globalization and outsourcing, of voicemail vacuousness and shopping on the Internet, there are few things more gratifying to me than standing in a clothing shop getting a second or third fitting from a tailor who is personally and pridefully engaged in what he's doing.

Talese's author photos have captured his sartorial style over the years. From 1970, the cover of Fame and Obscurity.

SEASONS OF NON

'Seasons of Non'
A Blackbird Shop-in-Shop by Unholy Matrimony's Brett Westfall

Unholy Matrimony was conceived in 2002 by artist Brett Westfall and launched in 2003 with the idea of combining conceptual art and fashion design. He recently collaborated with Comme des Garcons's Rei Kawakubo on the new CDG Homme Plus line, which debuted as part of the Comme des Garcons Spring 09 runway collection during Paris fashion week. Brett is also co-owner of the CDG +1 213 Guerilla Store, the first American Comme des Garcons store, located in Los Angeles.

October will bring the union of Blackbird and Unholy Matrimony in the form of a shop-in-shop, a conceptual installation. What this means, we hope to discover on Oct 25th, when the shop opens and our friends gather to celebrate and take in the happenings.

DUWAMISH

Local Duwamish people parked their canoes in downtown Seattle

"The Duwamish tribe (pronounced [dxʷdɐwʔabʃ] in Lushootseed) is a Native American tribe in western Washington, and the indigenous people of metropolitan Seattle. The Duwamish tribe today includes the People of the Inside, for Elliott Bay environs today; and the People of the Large Lake, for those around Lake Washington of today. By language, the Duwamish are (Skagit-Nisqually) Lushootseed Salish. Adjacent tribes throughout the Puget Sound-Strait of Georgia basin were interconnected and interrelated, yet distinct. The people have been living in what is now metropolitan Seattle since the end of the last glacial period (c. 8,000 B.C.E.—10,000 years ago)." - Wikipedia.com

HATS!

We have received our fall/winter 2008 shipment of hats from Seattle-based brand Coal, as well as their newer brand creation Coal Considered. Pictured above are knit caps, hats, and gloves from both brands as well as some lovely mittens from Cheap Monday. Specific item details will soon follow but until then stop by the shop to check out the arrivals.

HARMON FISHERMAN PANTS

At long last we have received restocks of Harmon's incredibly popular Fisherman Pants. We first received this style last March to a very warm reception and they sold out almost immediately. They are now finally back in the shop and we are falling in love all over again. The baggy high waisted cut works great on either guys or girls in a number of different styles. Wear them with a baggier jacket (Coming Soon comes to mind) for a full touch of relaxation or go with simply a t-shirt tucked into them for a fun twist on the casual outfit. The comfortable fit can be worn with sneakers, dress shoes, tucked into boots, sandals, etc; they work surprisingly well with just about anything. However you wear them, they will be very eye-catching to anyone around.

Harmon - Fisherman Pants
in black
DETAILS: 100% cotton twill, belted/tied waist, inseam is twisted from the knee down to the hem
sizes: 1 [note that, due to the oversized belted waist, these work as 'one size fits all]
$372

YOU CAN HELP THE BALLARD FOOD BANK

More than 600 Ballard, Magnolia and Queen Anne households receive food, clothes, or emergency financial assistance each week from the Ballard Food Bank. And in these tough economic times, the food bank could use your help, from volunteers to donations.

Volunteering is a great way to give back to your neighborhood. Monday through Friday you can, help load and unload food, give out food, bag groceries for home delivery, sort donations, help out at the clothing bank, or serve food in the kitchen.

The food bank could also use monetary donations — any amount is greatly appreciated. They also accept nonperishable food like canned goods, pasta, peanut butter, etc. And nonfood items like clean used clothing, blankets, sheets, sleeping bags and personal hygiene supplies.

A quarter of the Ballard Food Bank’s assistance goes to children in need, and the vast majority of the nonprofit’s funding comes from neighbors and small businesses. To learn how you can help by volunteering, click here. And to donate, click here. Thank you for your help!

VISIT THE VATICAN...AT OKOK GALLERY

The Vatican presents I am here, I was there, a site-specific and time-based installation from artist Iole Alessandrini. I am here, I was there is an interactive piece that invites the visitor to temporarily experience The Vatican...at OKOK Gallery:

The interactive nature of the work transports the viewer within the mediated space of a camera and screen within the micro exhibition space, viewed from chest level and angled upwards towards the ceiling. As visitors move in and out of the camera’s visual field, attention is guided toward the ceiling in which words LA CITTA' DEL VATICANO (I AM THERE ) are spelled backwards and in anamorphic perspective; a metaphor for an overhead Renaissance trompe l’oeil technique. The ceiling text forms a hemicycle in reference to the columns in Saint Peter’s Square located in front of Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. I am here, I was there suggests a liberating alternative to tourist catered Las Vegas style architecture and the Disneyfication of historical icons that deny visitor interpretation or assoiciative input in favor of a manufactured pre-packaged experience.

The Vatican is here! Are you there??
Visit OKOK Gallery this Saturday, October 11th, during the Ballard Art Walk (6:00p)

PUNKS NEED SOCKS in INDIANA

I found this story on Boing Boing today while checking out all the great Advanced Style press Ari Seth Cohen has been getting these days. This seems like a great cause. Indiana is a cold place and socks are expensive if you don't have much. Plus, they're punks trapped in the Mid West. Please send your support.

D. T. Friedman of the nonprofit OxenFree in Indiana writes:

"I’m the Resource Coordinator for a non-profit organization that works with homeless and indigent teenagers, as well as teens who are in bad home situations. OxenFree is a really fantastic program that engages at-risk teens through punk rock music, and provides support in a drug-free and alcohol-free environment.

The reason I’m invading blogs today? My job with OxenFree is to receive requests from the phenomenal people who run the program, and to figure out a way to fill them. My current assignment is…SOCKS. And I have to admit, I’m a bit at a loss. Socks are not a large-volume item at clothing centers (people usually just wear them out instead of donating them), and they’re surprisingly expensive. Homeless teenagers, especially hitchhikers, go through socks like you wouldn’t believe. My friend Margie can no longer afford to keep stocking her “free socks” drawer by herself, and asked me if I could try working my magic.

So, would you be willing to help me sock my punks?

Help with sock donations (Thanks, Mary!) "

SOCKS BY RICHARD JAMES OF SAVILLE ROW

New to the shop is the socks collection from Richard James of the famous Savile Row. If the tailoring tradition of Savile Row wasn't enough, since 1999 James's socks collection has been handled by Pantherella; one of Britain's finest hosiery manufacturers. Established in the early 1900s Pantherella quickly gained fame for its distinct colors and designs, as well as the excellent construction. From the beginning comfort has been the main goal of the makers and, despite the introduction of cheaper machine production options, this idea has never been compromised. Still to this day each sock gets the hand finished (see information on their hand linked toe) care that results in a luxurious final product.

Rag & Bone SS 2009

I have a confession to make. Rag & Bone will be our biggest brand at Blackbird this Spring. They're offering was massive due to the addition of many new categories to the line, such as sport, swim, sneakers and fine tailored suiting and shirting. They've also perfected many of their classic and always loved outerwear pieces, knitwear and denim styles. You are going to love what we picked.

Let us know if there is anything you wish to pre-order.

SEATTLENESS: TEMPLE OF THE DOG

Post Warehouse Sale numbness and confusion lead me to Seattle's Discovery Park where I just couldn't get Temple of the Dog's Hungerstrike out of my head. Their video was shot at the park over by the bluffs and on the beach by the lighthouse. Check out the nostalgia.

No... I'm not going to post Spoonman next. Sorry.
