BAND OF OUTSIDERS S/S2009 TIES

Our Band of Outsiders spring/summer 2009 ties are now online!

FIGHTING A GOOD FIGHT: KEXP

Today I received an email from Tom Mara from my absolute and only radio station KEXP. If you are not familiar with the station and simply love music of any type, check them out. Also, read his thought provoking letter below.

For the past four years, Blackbird has offered current KEXP members a 10% discount on any full price items in the store. Donate today, become a member and receive this discount every time you shop at Blackbird (in-store only for now). You'd be silly not to.

This is something Blackbird is passionate about as it holds our community together and keeps our minds open to diversity and the arts. When I travel or interact with my friends from around the globe I am reminded of the negative effects of commercial radio. Give it a week and you'll see.

"Nearly two weeks after President Obama’s inaugural address, and I’m still buzzing about the historic moment we all witnessed as the first African American president was sworn into office. Regardless of your political persuasion, no one can deny that we are at a pivotal time in our nation’s history, filled with possibilities.

I was moved not only by the scene, but by the art that accompanied the ceremony. It’s artists’ ability to challenge audiences, delve into indescribable parts of human emotion and experience, and provide ideas for exploring the world, which has made their presence almost mandatory. Artists play an important role in our civic dialogue, whether we’re ushering in a new president or opening a new public library. Through music, artists share stories and create understanding. We would be lost without them.

But artists’ work must be available to us in order to enjoy it, and this includes popular music. Often, a sympathetic figure in the background bolsters an artist by taking a chance and presenting the artist's work to audiences. It’s in this position of the arts advocate that KEXP truly excels. We’ve all heard the story of how Sam Phillips of Sun Records took a chance and recorded an unknown artist named Elvis Presley, among many others. And, it was John Peel who discovered, loved, and championed The Fall, who inspire some of KEXP's favorite artists like The Smiths, Pavement, and LCD Soundsystem.

KEXP listeners regularly thank us for helping them discover new music. They tell us to keep "fighting the good fight." They recognize that there are few places remaining which champion music for the artistic power it has in our lives. The marketplace’s pressure to sell products has pushed out many emerging and established artists. Today, there are few remaining trustworthy resources for discovering new music. People like Sam Phillips and John Peel are fewer and farther between, which has silenced the voices of thousands of artists.

At KEXP we are bucking the trend. We strongly believe that All Good Music Deserves To Be Heard – it’s one of the organization’s core values. As public radio’s “performing arts center of the airwaves,” we offer a strong artistic program, providing broad access to audiences via many channels - on the air, in the community, and on the web.

But how can we be sure that we’re bringing you the very best in music and ideas? KEXP has rigorous filtering system, which uses open ears to unearth the music we believe our audience would like to hear. Each year, KEXP receives nearly 10,000 albums and we listen to each one. As Don Yates, KEXP’s Music Director, puts it "we want to give every album the time and attention it deserves." Plus, we receive and seek out even more music based on artist, listener, and DJ recommendations. Of the original 10,000 records, about 2,000 are selected for the KEXP music library.

By taking the pulse of local, national, and world-wide music scenes, everyday, KEXP is able to keep our service vibrant and meaningful to you. And, we are ensuring that musicians who would not get played on other stations (on the air or the web) have their music heard by hundreds of thousands of people. It makes for a more diverse arts experience for our listeners, and by extension, a whole community of music lovers.

I encourage you to share your thoughts about your KEXP experience - tom@kexp.org.

Your feedback has made KEXP what it is today, and will help those of us in the KEXP community who work at the station chart the course for the future. You’ve set the bar high. You expect a certain quality when you experience the arts, and you’ve chosen us to be your place for discovery. We understand that we have a special responsibility to you and all our listeners. Your financial support powers our ability to take chances on artists. In essence, you power the KEXP soundtrack for your life. What a great honor it is to share this journey of exploration together."

THE ONLY ONES

"I got there at 1 o'clock and Peter [Perrett] didn't appear. He was in the bath waiting for [his wife] Zena to come and wash his hair! After two hours I said, 'Enough's enough, I'm off'. At that point Peter came in and sat down and started chatting. I was thinking 'Well, I still don't like the band anyway', but then he asked me if I wanted to hear a tape.

[...] I loved his lyrics, the sentiments, his voice. We rehearsed together for two weeks and I thought, 'Yeah, I'm part of this'."

[...]

"At the beginning, a lot of things seemed bizarre. I like the idea of finding myself in a situation where I don't feel comfortable for a while. To my friends, The Only Ones were a bizarre band. Mentally I found myself doubling over to get my head around certain things. I mean, Peter waiting for Zena to wash his hair was beyond me. Him having a girlfriend and a wife. Even "Out There In The Night", I asked him what it was about. It turned out that it was a love song about his cat, which hadn't come home. He adored this cat, it would go in the bath with him and lie on top of him. When he told me the song was about a cat, and the cat was the only creature that gave him unconditional love, I thought 'This guy is definitely different'." -- Alan Mair [The Only Ones bassist] on Peter Perrett [The Only Ones frontman] in Nina Antonia's book The One and Only: Peter Perrett - Homme Fatale

LEAVE ME ALONE!: A Jazz Opera

Harvey Pekar of American Splendor fame has contributed a libretto for an autobiographical jazz opera to be accompanied by music by saxophonist Dan Plonsey. The opera is entitled Leave Me Alone! and is set to be performed on January 31st in Oberlin, Ohio. If you are nowhere near Ohio, the performance will also be broadcast live online via the opera's official homepage. Mark your calendars!

The official homepage states..
"LEAVE ME ALONE! is a new jazz opera with music by Dan Plonsey on a libretto by Harvey Pekar, to be performed at 8pm on January 31st, 2009 in Finney Chapel, Oberlin College, OH, and streamed live to an international online audience.

The story of the opera revolves around conversations between the composer and librettist held from their respective living rooms in the Bay Area and Cleveland. Dan and Harvey, the two primary interlocutors, played by themselves, engage in discussions about music, the life of the artist as householder, finding time to work, the current state of the avant garde, and the opera itself.

Further characters include their wives, Mantra Ben-ya'akova Plonsey and Joyce Brabner (also played by themselves), and Musical Director Josh Smith. Telephone appearance by Robert Crumb in conversation with the artists provides additional perspectives on the opera's themes. An ensemble of 6 musicians comprises the orchestra accompanying four singers who variously double the protagonists.

Both Plonsey and Pekar are deeply committed to the notion that art transgresses and transcends distinctions of class and hence ought to be populist in nature, available to all."

INTRODUCING CHAUSSER

Blackbird now has in stock a range of high quality shoes and bags by Chausser of Japan. Chausser's goods use beautiful leathers sourced from top suppliers around the world and are all constructed back in Japan. The construction on all of these items really gives a lovely hand-made feeling; every detail is done with the utmost care. Most importantly, each style is terribly comfortable; made to be incredibly sturdy and ready to last!

In addition to the Chausser items, we have one sneaker style (available in two colors) from the Chausser off-shoot line YOH number eighty one.

A note on the sizing; the YOH eighty one sneakers come only as three sizes (42, 44, 46) but these run about a size smaller than marked and are intended to accommodate in-between sizes. The normal Chausser shoes, however, fit pretty much in line with most other European shoe brands.

Chausser - C741 Leather Shoes
in navy
DETAILS: Made from a grain-textured vegetable-tanned cowhide upper with cowhide sole; the grainy texture smooths out towards the end of its rounded toe. A sleek shoe with a beautiful basic shape and low heel. The navy color is a very dark shade and, with wear, it will darken towards an almost-black.
sizes: 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45

BLACKBIRD NEIGHBORS SERVING ONE OF THE 'WORLD'S DUMBEST COCKTAILS'

(photo from men.style.com)

Just across the street from Blackbird is Fu Kun Wu who was recently been listed in men.style.com's feature of the World's Dumbest Cocktails [click here to go directly to their slide]. Their signature Yojito, a mojito made with the African aphrodisiac yohimbe, is apparently worthy to be ranked among thirteen others in the list.

men.style.com writes...
"This Mojito-based absurdity aims to wear down your inhibitions while enhancing your libido: It's made with the African stimulant yohimbe, reputed to be both a mild hallucinogen and an aphrodisiac. Just be warned: Fu Kun Wu limits customers to one per night, so why not spike Bud with Viagra instead? It'd probably taste better."

We here at Blackbird certainly like the Yojito well enough. The idea may seem stupid, but that doesn't mean it doesn't taste absolutely delicious. Try it out for yourself and be the judge; Fu Kun Wu is open from 5PM until midnight with their happy hour running 5PM to 7PM.

SHOOT 'EM

via The New York Times

RARE roast beef splashed with meaty jus, pork enrobed in luscious crackling fat, perhaps a juicy, plump chicken ... these are feasts that come to mind when one thinks of quintessential British food. Lately, however, a new meat is gracing the British table: squirrel.

Though squirrel has appeared occasionally in British cookery, history doesn’t deem it a dining favorite. Even during World War II and the period of austerity that followed, the Ministry of Food valiantly promoted the joys of squirrel soup and pie. British carnivores replied, “No, thank you.”

These days, however, in farmers’ markets, butcher shops, village pubs and elegant restaurants, squirrel is selling as fast as gamekeepers and hunters can bring it in.

“Part of the interest is curiosity and novelty,” said Barry Shaw of Shaw Meats, who sells squirrel meat at the Wirral Farmers Market near Liverpool. “It’s a great conversation starter for dinner parties.”

While some have difficulty with the cuteness versus deliciousness ratio — that adorable little face, those itty-bitty claws — many feel that eating squirrel is a way to do something good for the environment while enjoying a unique gastronomical experience.

With literally millions of squirrels rampaging throughout England, Scotland and Wales at any given time, squirrels need to be controlled by culls. This means that hunters, gamekeepers, trappers and the Forestry Commission (the British equivalent of forest rangers) provide a regular supply of the meat to British butchers, restaurants, pâté and pasty makers and so forth.

The situation is more than simply a matter of having too many squirrels. In fact, there is a war raging in Squirreltown: invading interlopers (gray squirrels introduced from North America over the past century or more) are crowding out a British icon, the indigenous red squirrel immortalized by Beatrix Potter and cherished by generations since. The grays take over the reds’ habitat, eat voraciously and harbor a virus named squirrel parapox (harmless to humans) that does not harm grays but can devastate reds. (Reports indicate, though, that the reds are developing resistance.)

“When the grays show up, it puts the reds out of business,” said Rufus Carter, managing director of the Patchwork Traditional Food Company, a company based in Wales that plans to offer squirrel and hazelnut pâté on its British Web site, patchwork-pate.co.uk.

Enter the “Save Our Squirrels” campaign begun in 2006 to rescue Britain’s red squirrels by piquing the nation’s appetite for their marauding North American cousins. With a rallying motto of “Save a red, eat a gray!” the campaign created a market for culled squirrel meat.

British bon vivants suddenly couldn’t get enough squirrel. Television chefs were preparing it, cookbooks were extolling it, farmers’ markets were selling out of it and restaurants in many places were offering it on the menu.

Meanwhile gamekeepers, hunters and trappers were happy to know that the meat was being eaten, not wasted. “My lads don’t like to kill an animal if it’s not going to be eaten,” Mr. Shaw said of the hunters who bring him game.

Many enjoy squirrel, however, simply because they like its taste. Mr. Carter said he didn’t know what he was eating when he tried it. But, he said, “at first bite, I thought it delicious.” Patchwork will send squirrel pâté, by the way, in return for a donation to “Save Our Squirrels” — but only within Britain.

Mark Holdstock, a writer and broadcaster specializing in countryside matters, is less enthusiastic, having recently eaten squirrel on the air on “Farming Today,” BBC Radio 4’s iconic program devoted to rural issues. “It’s fair to say I didn’t dislike it,” he said.

Nichola Fletcher, a food writer and co-owner of a venison farm, held a squirrel tasting for Britain’s Guild of Food Writers, finding “their lovely flavor tasted of the nuts they nibbled.” At a later event, however, she found the flavor disappointing, with “a greasy texture and unpleasant taste,” presumably reflecting these squirrels’ diet.

Though squirrel has been promoted as a low-fat food, Ms. Fletcher said that in her experience, “the quality and amount of fat varied from no visible fat to about 30 percent, depending on the season, their age and, especially, diet.”

Fergus Henderson, the chef and co-owner of St. John restaurant in London, offers squirrel on the menu “seasonally.” Though the meat is available all year long, it is in the spring, when hunting season is over, that country folk can focus their attentions on controlling the squirrel population. That’s when squirrel appears on St. John’s menu.

Mr. Henderson, who cooks with both poetry and passion, sometimes prepares his squirrels “to recreate the bosky woods they come from,” braising them with bacon, “pig’s trotter, porcini and whole peeled shallots to recreate the forest floor.” He serves it with wilted watercress “to evoke the treetops.”

Other chefs may be less lyrical, but they are no less enthusiastic. The Famous Wild Boar Hotel in Britain’s Lake District serves squirrel Peking-duck style; at Matfen Hall, a grand country house hotel, it is layered with hazelnuts into a terrine; in Cornwall, it can be found baked into the iconic meat pie known as a pasty.

If you want to grab your shotgun, make sure you have very good aim — squirrels must be shot in the head; a body shot renders them impossible to skin or eat. (You want to get rid of the head in any event, as squirrel brains have been linked to variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the human form of mad cow disease.)

Skinning a squirrel is “difficult and unpleasant,” the food writer Leslie Mackley said, adding, “You have to fight to rip the skin from the flesh.”

A. H. Griffiths, who sells squirrel for the equivalent of about $3 per squirrel at the butcher shop in Shropshire that bears his name, added that it is “best left to the professionals.”

“Each squirrel skinned makes the next one easier,” he added. “When you’ve skinned as many as I have, you find the best way.”

Mr. Griffiths is a fan of the meat, likening it to a slightly oily rabbit. “We started selling squirrel a few years ago, after the owner of our local pub bragged about winning a squirrel-eating contest,” he said. Then, he said, the owner “caught a squirrel, casseroled it up, and we liked it so much Griffiths has been selling it ever since.”

One might think that because of easy availability, squirrel would be the perfect meal-stretcher for these economically challenged times, but it takes a lot of work to get the meat off even the plumpest squirrel. (One would make a good main course.) Combined with the aforementioned difficulty in skinning, Mr. Carter said, many otherwise enthusiastic hunters, gamekeepers and chefs “can’t be bothered with it.”

WOOLRICH WOOLEN MILLS PRE-ORDER

"The Woolrich Woolen Mills collection is a project that stems from the passion of the rediscovery of the American manufacturing tradition, of which Woolrich still represents an actual icon; its' uniqueness is tied to the history and values of the Woolrich "working community", a town that rises and develops around the Mill's activities.

"The [collection] is a Men's Collection that is geared towards a target that is aware of the value of tradition and that loves to possess authentic and functional products." (from the official website)

The Woolrich Woolen Mills collection is designed by famous American vintage and work-wear enthusiast Daiki Suzuki. Born in Japan, Suzuki has been living in the states since 1989 where he has worked on a number of projects, including launching his own line, Engineered Garments, in 1999. Suzuki has become known as an absolute master of all things Americana and it translates perfectly into his designs. Each style is created with functionality in mind; as in a true work-wear fashion, you will not find in these garments anything which does not have a very specific use. From fabrics and cuts to hidden pockets, everything is designed to be used -- and hard.

We are expecting the Woolrich Woolen Mills collection to be shipping to us approximately between the beginning of February and end of March, but for now all items are available for pre-order. All pre-orders will require a non-refundable 40% deposit towards the item. Please e-mail with any inquiries.

CLOSETED 2009

One big old bummer for 2009 is that Men.Style.com will no longer let you embed their videos. Not sure what's the big deal, except that it probably has something to do with ad revenue. For me it makes it less fun to post their videos.

Please enjoy their "In The Closet: Year-End Spectacular" including a nice plug for Robert Geller.

A BIG POST OF SPRING/SUMMER 2009 PREVIEWS!

Below is a selection of preview looks from some collections coming to Blackbird for the spring/summer 2009 season. There are a handful of new brands expected, as well as the usual favourites. Not all is represented below, but do take a look!

OUR LEGACY This will be our second season with the Stockholm-based brand. Already a staple for those looking for timeless go-to designs. Check out this article on Refinery29 from last season for a brief introduction.

LARS ANDERSON

NICE COLLECTIVE We had the very popular Nice Collective combat boots in the shop late this season and coming for SS2009 will be a more thorough representation of the collection. Clean military-inspired designs to suit all body types.

WRATH ARCANE Streetwear-with-a-twist out of Cleveland, OH. This article from JC Report does quite a good job describing just what to look forward to.

FIFTH AVENUE SHOE REPAIR A new brand for the us! The Swedish line Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair plays heavily with a draping silhouette, mixed with classic tailoring and materials. We will be receiving the collections for both men and women!

JULIUS This collection was the brand's first Paris runway show. The FW2008 collection was a huge hit in the shop and SS2009 will feature an even bigger selection. The slim, draping fits make it perfect as a unisex brand.

ROBERT GELLER O' Mr. Geller is back! Geller is a Blackbird favourite and, as usual, we will be getting a very large selection of the line. This collection gives a twist on many classic pieces, playing with the cut, silhouette, and materials. Lots of very comfy relaxed linens.

HOPE Already well-known over in Sweden, Hope has most recently been making quite a name for itself stateside. Playful cuts and structure with a masculine edge. We will be carrying the collection for both men and women!

TIM HAMILTON

SABATINO Jay Sabatino is already a household name overseas but he is just beginning to become known over here. This collection takes from the 20s and 30s revival movement of the 70s. The relaxed silhouettes make use of updated vintage patterns and, while shown in lookbook photos worn as a full outfit, mix also very well with more modern cuts and styles.

WOOLRICH WOOLEN MILLS A selection of classic garments out of America's oldest woolen mill. Click here to read up on the detailed history.

RAG & BONE They just keep getting better! This collection takes heavy influence from English rock & roll and mod culture, mixing it with the precision tailoring we have come to expect. This collection features also some absolutely gorgeous suiting pieces (shown in the top photo, for example) made by the legendary tailor Martin Greenfield.

BALLARD TOURIST VIDEO

LOST BUILDINGS

My brother recently moved to Chicago, which kind of coincides with an interest Nicole and I have both developed in Chicago architecture. For Christmas he sent us a fantastic gift: the DVD/book set Lost Buildings.

It's the portable version of a 2004 This American Life stage show done by Ira Glass and cartoonist Chris Ware about their friend Tim Samuelson's obsession with Chicago architect Louis Sullivan. The story is fascinating, and Chris's drawings are spectacular (see above).

It's hard to find, but right now you can still buy it at the NPR Shop.

BEST/WORST BLACKBIRD T-SHIRT

Uh... mazing!

(The SR-71 Blackbird is/was an "advanced", long-range Mach 3 aircraft developed by Lockheed in 1964.)

[RE]COVERY

John Harper and Scott Dierdorf spend their spare time recreating covers to albums, DVDs and books and posting their creations on a new blog titled (RE)COVERY. Scott takes the photos , Scott and John talk and then John designs the new covers. To me, the idea is genius.

APRIL 77 RECORDS, ARTIST OF THE MONTH, Last Rapes of Mister Teach

If you purchased a pair of April 77 Records jeans from us, you could scratch off the gold crud on the little record to reveal a code. This code can be used on the April 77 site to download a single from the recording artist of the month.

January's band: Last Rapes of Mister Teach

HERE'S WHAT THE SITE SAYS ABOUT LRMT: "It's not always easy when you don't come from places like L.A., NYC, London, or any other big city that makes your band feel soooooo cool & soooooooo hype because you come from a city that looks sooooo cool & soooooo hype. Even Iggy Pop had to leave Detroit.

The guys from THE LAST RAPES OF MISTER TEACH come from:

Pierre: Villard Saint-Pancrace (High Alps/France)
Martin: Loutre (High Alps/France)
Maxime: L'argentière La Bessée (High Alps/France)
Xavier: Val Des Prés (High Alps/France)

Not very easy, huh ?!?

Believe us, these places deep in the deep depths of deep France, we know them well. Perhaps they are our first homes or the homes of our loved ones. In these lands one admires no go-go dancers, meets no rock stars, snorts no cocaine, and covets no free issues from Vice.

The only remedy for the regional snow that encourages the amputation of kneecaps is called Genepi, a.k.a. strong alcohol made of aromatic Alpine plants with weird, yet repetitive names such as Artemisia mutellina, Artemisia spicata, Artemisia umbelliformis and Artemisia glacialis. Say that five times fast. Mr. Teach can.

Moving on. The youngsters met in high school and started playing punk music, seeing as they were all fans of the Sex Pistols, and it was one less thing to argue about, since everyone else in their painful pubescent childhood was into Pink Zeppelin. Thanks to the microfilm technology available in the French public libraries of the day, they started diggin' more and more into the punk movement. They traveled all the way back in time to the famous "Nuggets" compilation, feeling at ease in this garage-world of Seeds, Sonics, & Electric Prunes.

Then one summer, after the thawing of their kneecaps of course, they tackled the epic descent from the brutal High Alps mountains and headed towards the Bay of Biscay and the warm sunny beaches of Biarritz. A-ba-ba-ba-Ba-Ba-Barbara-Ann.

They loved it. Sunny beaches, clear sand, girls, girls in bikinis, melted chocolate, and surf are hard to hate, right? With wandering minds and the thirst of life in need of quenching, along with one look at the ocean, several dreams of rhum and women (the bikini effect), the name of the band came naturally: They were indeed the last rapes of Mister Teach (Mister Teach is the real name of the infamous English pirate, duh).

Their mission became soforth: "To conquer the planet aboard a genuine rock'n'roll ship."

So now watch out big cities! Especially ones that aren't landlocked!

These 4 pirates use their songs as weapons, stealing away your gold, your women, and your wine. They've already ravaged many cities in France, Italy, Poland, Deutschland (German for Germany), and the United Kingdom.

Lock up your treasures: THE LAST RAPES OF MISTER TEACH are coming!

Arrrrrgh!"
