Cardboard Cars in Ballard

Forget the dead babies. Saturday night the cardboard cars showed up in Ballard and parked their creations on the street in front of the Ballard Eagles Club stealing the spotlight from the scooter set and moped kids. Cardboard boxes and old bicycles turned Rollaroid (Polaroid with actual flashbulb), baby bassinet, helicopter, cock with glowing eyes, Lego's and more! Got to love that creativity and originality around town.

DECADENT DIPTYQUE FROM PARIS

Blackbird is excited to introduce Diptyque; a fresh fragrance line from Paris that encompasses quality, authenticity, and exclusivity.

In 1961, three friends opened a shop on Boulevard Saint Germain in Paris France called Diptyque. They started with candles, but the line grew to include eau de toilette, scented soaps, body wash, and luxurious body cream, almost all of which are unisex.

The Diptyque fragrances come from the fragrance capital of the world, Grasse, France. It is Diptyque's proudest accomplishment to have never used a synthetic fragrance in developing its products. Whether they are woodsy, spicy, green, floral or fruity, they are all natural and you can tell.

Over time we will feature selected fragrances, body products and candles in detail but for now you can shop all Diptyque products on BlackbirdBallard.com. If there is a product you love but don't see, email us at info@blackbirdballard.com to special order.

ART: NUDES by JOEY BATES, THE LINE KING

Joey Bates
"Nudes - 10 new works made of cut paper and graphite"
July 1st through July 31st - Opening Reception Juy 2nd 6-8pm
Zeitgeist - 171 S. Jackson Seattle, WA 98104

(click on this to see the continuous line details. outstanding!)

Statement:
"Nudes" is comprised of two different experiments.
Last year I started incorporating cut paper into my artwork. The five cut out nudes seen in this show are studies of the human form (technically one human). Care was taken in the formal aspects of the pictures while working in a medium I am just beginning to work with.
The five graphite drawings presented here are step away from my previous work. For the past five years I have been focusing on portraiture with an emphasis on facial expression. For this show I have asked the sitters to disrobe and relax as many facial muscles as possible. The results are a series of studies of the upper torso and head. I have found that there is a large difference in our faces when we let go of facial expressions and are not communicating with on another.

KNOCK OUT NAILS

The newest thing Birgitta girls cannot live without:
Knock Out - a new line of nail polish where art deco meets ultimate rock chic.

Mike Porter and Aaron McCann, creators of KO, have put out a unique matte finish polish for the rebel in all of us. You can get a long-lasting no-shine look by just painting on one coat, or, once dry, you can buff it to a luscious satin sheen. The sophisticated polish goes on smooth, like matte lipstick from the 40s, and the longer it is worn, the more each shade changes into a glossy patina. If you are looking to stand out in the crowd, look no further. Formaldehyde, DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate - a toxic chemical), and cruelty free. Available in flat black, powder, liberty, calamine, flatte top, ox, and karen [shown above].

STYLE.COM -- SAFETY LAST

Yesterday men.style.com launched a feature on five designers who are creating some new and very exciting things and straying far from the pack of tradition. In addition to general information and past-season shots, the article features also some sneak peaks to the designers' upcoming spring/summer 2010 collections which will be soon shown in Paris. The article starts off with Rick Owens who has, in the past couple years, really started becoming known in the more mainstream fashion world, and is soon followed by Blackbird favourites Julius and Odyn Vovk.

Click here to go to the article's opening. Click here to go directly to the Julius slide or here for Odyn Vovk.

Below text courtesy of Matthew Schineier and men.style.com, photos from the respective designers.

JULIUS -- "Japan's Tatsuro Horikawa founded Julius in 2001, after working for several years on his earlier label, Nuke. Horikawa's meticulously detailed, military-inspired pieces—most in black—are carried at some of America's most directional menswear boutiques, including New York's Atelier, San Francisco's The Archive, and Blackbird in Seattle, but that success hasn't seemed to lighten the designer's moody disposition. "I am obsessed with the image of 'black' in Japanese religion, in Zen," he writes. "It is the total color of complete and utter grief.""

ODYN VOVK -- Austin Sherbanenko founded Odyn Vovk (pronounced odin vock, Ukrainian for "one wolf") after dropping out of fashion school and setting up shop in downtown L.A. In the time it took most of his peers to graduate, Sherbanenko—who's inspired primarily by music like hardcore, punk, and Scandinavian black metal—is gaining traction with the new generation of forward-minded buyers.

The Fresh and Onlys
Unnatural Helpers

There's an undeniable '60s vibe to the Fresh & Onlys' bristling guitars, aching reverb, and off-kilter vocals, and Sartin has acknowledged the influence of the 13th Floor Elevators on his songwriting (Cohen claims inspiration from the Minutemen). As the act's singer and guitarist, Cohen dreams up screwy lines about hookers, tropical islands, and imaginary friends, croaking them out in a sort of oblivious fever. "He has a really cracked approach to lyrics, and the stories he tells in his songs are sincere," Sartin says. "He's never trying to be consciously funny or strange. He's just a strange and funny dude." So far the Fresh & Onlys have flown under the radar, despite Kelley Stoltz releasing their debut 7-inch and Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer issuing their self-titled album on Castleface. They have a 7-inch out on the Seattle label Dirty Knobby Industries, and have plans for releases on the Chicago label HoZac and the Brooklyn labels Captured Tracks and Woodsist. The lattermost will release the Fresh & Onlys' sophomore album, Grey-Eyed Girls, toward the end of summer. The band also plans to do an album early next year with the resurgent L.A. label In the Red. - excerpt from S.F. weekly, read more here

THIS WEEKEND: MOORE INSIDE OUT

The Seattle art collective Free Sheep Foundation will be taking over the Moore Theatre tomorrow (Saturday 6/20) night to transform it into something you won't see again. Free Sheep Foundation has become known around Seattle in particular for their taking over abandoned buildings before their demolition, creating inside-and-around new worlds of art and installations. The Moore Theatre is not being demolished, but you might expect it to be after seeing what Free Sheep Foundation has planned for it.

Probably the most well-publicized work they have done was the transformation of the [at the time] to-be-destroyed Bridge Motel in Fremont in September 2007 (photos below). Participants filled the rooms and parking lot of this seedy motel with sound, art, roaming butoh dancers, performances, a campfire, and much more. Right now locals can also head over to the equally seedy old bathhouse Tubs on 50th & Roosevelt in the University District to see their work on that building.

Free Sheep Foundation has arranged for over fifty performances of various means to go on through the night for Moore Inside Out. From bathrooms filled with watermelons to local DJ Scratchmaster Joe performing the soundtrack of hell down in the cavernous bar at the Moore, there is going to be a lot to see. Without the many performances, even, Moore Inside Out will give people a bit more access to the historical Moore Theatre than we might normally have; that should be reason enough to a lot of people to go check it out.

Click here (pdf) for the official press release or here for an article from the Stranger giving some history of Free Sheep Foundation, as well as a rundown of some of the events for tomorrow night.

This is happening tomorrow (Saturday 6/20) night from 6-10PM at the Moore Theatre and it is FREE.

BAXTER'S BRAVADO SMELLS GOOD AT BLACKBIRD

Baxter of California recently extended their mens grooming line with two new fragrances - Bravado 2 and Bravado 3, also known as Black and White respectively. The original Bravado was launched in the early 1970's as a floral yet woodsy cologne. It faded off the market almost a decade ago, but fragrances have since been re-introduced by the company's current president, Jean-Pierre Mastey. The very cool cologne bottle and packaging were designed by Marc Atlan using a textured foil application. Bravado 2 Black features notes of citrus, light floral, soft vanilla musk, lemon, basil, cypress, and mandarin. Bravado 3 White features mandarin, floral lavender, musk, bergamot, and nutmeg. Come smell them today.

KZO CAMERA BACK PACK

This is the most original design we've encountered for carrying camera gear. Its slick, cool, totally functional and not your ordinary drab case. Instead, a back pack that is fully customizable to suit. The lens and camera body spaces held in place with velcro allow the pro or hobbyist photographer to make the best use of space for their gear. Its padded, has a top zip that expands to hold memory cards, film and light meter. A small front pocket and two mesh side pockets for more storage. A side zip which can hold a 17" laptop. The best part is the extra zip out layer for rain protection. And even if you're not a photographer, just remove the dividers and you have one very rad back pack.

SHOW OF THE WEEK: RECAP

great show, great people, great night

Here's what The Stranger had to say:

"You can’t help coming off like Dweeby McDweeberson when you try to analyze music like this. But here goes anyway…

Seattle trio Idle Times played scrappy garage rock that’s as common as PBR. A lot of people like PBR, so Idle Times should be golden. They rocked in a perfectly functional manner, but it’s hard to say much more than that. If you’ve been listening seriously to music for five years or longer, you will have encountered many bands like this, no matter where you’ve lived. And you can appreciate them. (Idle Times' lineup last time I saw them at the Comet included Dean Whitmore and Charles Leo Gebhardt IV, and that may be why I liked them better then; neither played last night.) This is coming off snottier than I intend; Idle Times are a good band, but sometimes you want more than you get on a given night.

The Oh Sees, four Caucasians from San Francisco, came on in full hyperkinetic mode. They played garage-derived rock, too, but these treble-maniacs trebled the energy level (the song title “Meat Step Lively,” which they duly performed with great urgency, aptly describes the tenor of the Oh Sees’ set). Band leader John Dwyer holds his guitar high on his torso and frequently fellates the mic when he sings. He looks like he wants to pick fights with his own songs as he plays them. Brigid Dawson stands center stage, plays keyboards, slams tambourines, and sings, but she is by no means a traditional female rocker on whom you focus; she’s just another valuable cog in a well-oiled rock throwback machine. The Oh Sees’ music is nothing new, but through sheer dint of its primal, feral nature and catchy, familiar-sounding tunes, it thoroughly wins you over. Their no-nonsense, barreling gay-rog rok is done to absolute pitch (im)perfection.

Joining headliner Jay Reatard onstage were a chunky drummer (Billy Hayes) and a bassist (Stephen Pope) with a Buzz Osbourne-like ’fro. Both bassist and guitarist Reatard strapped on flying Vs. It didn’t seem possible, but things got even more rudimentary with these blokes. Jay’s face was mostly obscured by a curtain of wavy, auburn hair, and damn near everything he said and sang was indecipherable. The band immediately got to the point with Ramonesian unfussiness.

The song on the Croc’s PA right before Reatard took the stage was Slade’s “Cum on Feel the Noize,” and it was a fortuitous lead-in to the trio’s bubblegum-metal-punk fuzzbombing. Even when Jay reached for his acoustic, the songs careened at 100+ mph. The night’s most accessible number found Jay singing in an oddly girly Geddy Lee-esque tone.

Many fans really threw themselves into Jay Reatard’s performance. A young woman crowd-surfed and stage dove. The pit throbbed with much bouncing and colliding. Stranger freelancer Travis Ritter vigorously shook his head and gave many a one-beer salute. Security ushered out at least two customers—one a fat, hirsute white dude and the other a rail-thin black guy.

I expected more of a lo-fi, shambolic type of rock, but Jay Reatard & co. were pumping out arena-ready blur-blare (blargh). This type of nuance-free music bypasses critical faculties and shoots directly to the lizard brain. Nothing much stuck in the mind, but it all rushed through said thinking apparatus with such rude haste and crude energy that it electrified us in the motherfucking moment.

Jay Reatard played 35 minutes, definitely enough for the large Monday crowd to get the gist. (I woke up kind of deaf in one ear, and I wore plugs.) A 7 Seconds song came on the PA instantly after the band exited the stage—again, seeming strikingly apropos. But right before that, Jay yanked a guy up to the proscenium, gave him his guitar, and let the dude shred on it while Jay screamed. At song’s end, I looked up from my notebook to see Pope and the stand-in guitarist kissing and then violently parting in a shove. Couldn’t tell if the whole thing was staged or spontaneous, but, knowing Reatard’s rep for antagonism, he probably planned the whole thing—so he could blog about it later.

Dweeby McDweeberson, out."

Emancipated from the three piece suite, a vest can turn a pallid man into desirable with minimal effort. To the fashion forward, donning a vest may already be in your monthly routine, to those who are updating their wardrobes, you knew it was coming, and to others, it may be a daunting task. Not every vest will look good on everyone, and not everyone should wear a vest, but if you are looking to up the anti, try on a few of these tailored garments and see how you feel.

Be warned, there are a few questions to ask and details to remember when purchasing a vest. Is it too tight? Too loose? How is the length? And the answer to leather is always no. That said, if it has buttons, wear it snug, but if not, wear it loose. You can take a simple black vest and couple it with matching trousers to maximize elegance, or dress down a dark wool waistcoat by pairing it with patterned prints. Just remember, it's a vest, not a tank top, so it should be layered with a slim fitting short sleeved tee, patterned shirt for a more casual look or a button down for a polished presentation.

SHOW OF THE WEEK

Monday June 15th at The Crocodile

Jay Reatard

Thee Oh Sees
Idle Times (local FAVS)

"Emerging from shows with Daniel Johnston and a national tour with Sic Alps and Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees live shows are gritty, yet magnetic and infective. The band seems oblivious about their rock star performances, appearing rather as modest dilettantes in attitude, though Dwyer’s huge “THANKS” written in masking tape on the back of his guitar and Petey Dammit’s “YOU’S GUY’S” on the back of his, could evident they are tongue-in-cheek yet not so abnegative." INTERVIEWING A.P.C.

Eugene Kan of Hypebeast interviews Jean Touitou, the founder of the French brand A.P.C., about raw denim, fashion in America, and the reluctance of Japanese brands to expand internationally. (link)

Have there been any particular cities or regions in the world beyond the normal associations such as Tokyo and Paris which have caught your interest on a fashion level?

Yes, probably Northern European cities, Copenhagen.

Scandinavian countries?

Yes, Scandinavian countries. Even small Scandinavian cities have a strong sense of inventive fashion.

Do you think it comes down to their culture?

Yes, that is a good point. Maybe it comes down to their capacity of accepting and they have a good educational system. From the very beginning they are educated in nice buildings. There is something about harmony that make them look well. There isn’t such a great reliance on brands when it comes to fashion.

Over the years, how would you say the A.P.C. aesthetic has changed or developed? Would you say it has been pretty consistent?

It has been mentally consistent where it hasn’t changed. It’s funny you’re asking me this… yesterday I was on Wyndham Street passing by some Japanese brands and I thought it was good that they sort of woke up and killed minimalism. Some sort of chic minimalism is SO boring. I’m really glad I’m out of that. It’s the most boring thing. I’m glad I did it 15 years ago, 10 years we looked in another direction in the clothing design and architecture of the store.

What are your current thoughts on the current popularity of American contemporary menswear brands?

There are quite a few good things to come from this. Thom Browne is doing a good job in shaping and proportions. Although in the US, they have too many problems with menswear, the American body is just impossible. It’s impossible to have a huge man look elegant, that’s why in Asia they’re usually more handsome because the proportions are better. In America, they are obsessed in sports. Sometimes you go to Los Angeles, big chest and broad shoulders with skinny legs. So I think that’s a problem in menswear. Second problem is pricing, there is some good stuff such as Thom Browne and Tom Ford but the price is much too expensive.

How does A.P.C. tackle the problem of sizing being a well-known international brand now?

Trying to have clothes ranging from Asia to America and Europe, it’s hard to have a huge range of sizes. That’s the most technically difficult aspect.

I think that seems a big problem for Japanese brands is sizing as well?

Japanese brands don’t expand because they’re really shy. There’s something about the mentality of Japanese people that I don’t get. I’m friends with Sophnet’s Hirofumi Kiyonaga, who used to be an assistant of mine in Tokyo. I told him please go to New York, take my showroom, you’re my brother and go and do business. But they don’t go… there’s something about Japanese people being really shy about worldwide business.

How do you feel about the statement about A.P.C. regarding “we make noise not clothes”?

It’s true but it’s not true. If you stop making news, you’re “dead”. Sometimes you need to make some news, under the radar noise. Not too loud but you do have to make some noise. It’s very hard to do and sometimes you need to be both within and outside fashion.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I listen a lot to Metronomy and French singers of the late 70s. Singers that I didn’t listen to at the time, probably because I was your age and at that time it was mostly The Ramones and The New York Dolls. I wasn’t ignorant to their music but it was impossible to pick up that there was good French pop at the time. They looked ridiculous and something I couldn’t register. I’m really amazed by Metronomy though and I’ve worked a little bit with them.

Could you speak a bit about your Butler series of denim?

My jeans are done in a very good denim. Some people like to wear it in its raw state and never like to wash it which I agree. So what I said, if you give me back your jeans after two years, I’ll exchange it for 60% off. I wash it very carefully, mend it carefully and put a little drawing inside and then sell it. Even if you tell your manufacturer, I want the must beautiful used/washed denim without any price limits, you’ll never imitate the beauty of personally worn denim. In England’s aristocratic period, they would never wear something brand new cause they would find it vulgar. So they would give it to their butler to wear. We tried to do this in Japan but it didn’t work. People want to keep them and preserve as a memorabilia keepsake. But it worked well in France, Scandinavia and America.

We’ve seen a steady move towards fast, accessible fashion such as H&M, Zara and Uniqlo among others, what are your thoughts on that and what effect does it have on a brand like A.P.C.?

It has no effect on A.P.C.. I respect those people cause they have a great sense of logistics and production. But sometimes I hate them because the quality they use is very poor and it is disrespectful to the masses. Sometimes you put something on from them and you stink cause the fiber they use makes you smell “wrong”. While there’s no denying they copy people for their looks, but the problem is they copy too quickly. Patterns aren’t well done and the cuts aren’t good. Their communications relative to their money should hire better photographers and art directors. They have a great capacity for product too bad their efforts are wasted on poor quality offerings. I really mean that but I have a huge respect for them, it’s like running a country what they do. But there’s a lack of thinking.

KZO CENTRAL DENIM RE-STOCKS

One of our favourite jeans of the season is back in stock! KZO's Central Denim is a perfect slim jean full of subtle details to really set them apart from anything else. We have gotten re-stocks of these in the past but every time they quickly go out the door. Once this round is gone, they probably won't be around again until the next season's shipments start coming in.

KZO - Central Denim

The darting through the inner thighs helps keep the fit nice and slim throughout the entire leg. The waistband is constructed from one piece of fabric folded over which creates an almost 3D effect. The front pockets have a very slight amount of extra fabric which helps keep them very practical even with the slim fit through the thighs. Slightly low rise with a very subtly dropped crotch. WHO SAID YOU CAN'T SKATE IN A SUIT?

This brings the versatility of the suit to a whole other level. Yes, they are long boarding – you couldn’t go that fast on just a skateboard. This video is absolutely insane; they’re probably going 40+ mph.

SHOW OF THE WEEK: RECAP

Well if you didn't listen to me, and you did not make it to the show at the greenhouse on Saturday night....You missed out BIG TIME!

We walked up and the sidewalk was littered with people socializing, drinking beer, wine, and booze (yes there was a bar, w/ ID). SO many people showed up, that they stopped letting anyone in. That didn't stop the crowd from hanging out in the front yard, to listen to the music through the walls of the building. We missed Strong Killings and TacocaT. I was super bummed about that, but we got there in time to see a hot and sweaty performance by Partman Parthorse.

Enjoy this video of Partman Parthorse rocking the house

Restored archival classics from The Film Foundation screen this weekend.

Seattle, WA - The Seattle International Film Festival, in partnership with Gucci and The Film Foundation, is pleased to present two newly restored classic films, A Woman Under the Influence (1974, directed by John Cassavetes) and Le Amiche (1955, directed by Michelangelo Antonioni). The films are part of Cinema Visionaries, a traveling preservation screening series of films restored by Gucci and The Film Foundation. Both films will screen on June 6, 2009 at SIFF Cinema.

Celebrating a rich history influenced by film, this unique partnership is part of Gucci's ongoing commitment to film preservation and appreciation, through the dedicated work of The Film Foundation and key partners like the Seattle International Film Festival. Cinema Visionaries honors the work of innovative filmmakers who have made a significant contribution to the history of motion pictures, ensuring that great films from the past survive to entertain and inspire future audiences.

"Gucci's long-term commitment to supporting The Film Foundation's efforts to save cinematic treasures with the Cinema Visionaries program is a unique opportunity for us to bring these important films to new audiences that otherwise might never be able to see them on the big screen," says SIFF Artistic Director Carl Spence.

The foundation is dedicated to protecting and preserving motion picture history, and provides substantial annual support for preservation and restoration projects at the nation's major film archives. Odyn Vovk's Design Studio/Showroom's Entrance, Los Angeles, CA

1. ODYN VOVK—How did you came up with the name?

Odyn Vovk means “One Wolf” in Ukrainian. I am the ONE WOLF. I'm the last Sherbanenko boy to carry on the name. I also wanted to dedicate this project to my grandparents, who worked in labor camps during WWII / Nazi Germany in Germany. In the early 1940's the Nazis invaded Ukraine and took my grandparents along with some relatives to work like slaves in Germany. They went through a lot, and the horror stories I've heard are incredibly inspiring to me. The courage they had was amazing. My grandfather reminded me of a Wolf, hunting and searching to maintain their existence, like Wolves. He and his family did whatever it took to stay alive, and eventually made their way to the US.

2./ Motivation—What led you to start your own collection? Inspiration—Where do you get your ideas?

I’ve been fascinated by clothes ever since my early childhood—everything from altering them to coloring my hair. My appearance just seemed to be the most natural creative outlet for me. And, I’ve always had a somewhat different perspective on fashion than most of my peers. But, as far as starting my own collection, I went to design school for a while, but that didn’t quite work out so well. I wanted to do my own thing; I had a tee shirt line in high school, screen printed graphics, etc… Then, I had a major shift in my perspective on fashion, and quickly started to expand my designs into actual garments. I learned the basic ropes on my own by the simple method of trial and error; and I knew that I didn’t need school to figure everything out. But, I think the real motivation came when I completed my first piece, and just seeing my own creation come alive from start to finish – understanding the process and going through it step by step. The feeling I got was unexplainable, and from that moment I knew this is what I wanted to do. And I truly believe in myself. I think that is the main thing. Once you believe in yourself, you can do anything you set your mind to.

3./ Since this is a casting/styling blog—could you describe the ideal guy for your clothing?

Anyone who will look good and feel comfortable, and appreciate the design and quality construction of each garment. Or tall, long haired, anorexic boy who loves BLACK METAL!!! haha

4./ Could you describe to our readers, how your collection is created—from idea to execution?

I develop each piece mostly out of pure spontaneity. Truly, I’m inspired by anything that sparks my curiosity. Right now, many of my inspirations come from old photos, my travels, leather, fabrics, European folk music, classical music, English Punk, and Norwegian Black Metal. I transmit all of these influences through my work. The last piece I did started with a photo of an Indian ritual entitled, “Chest Piercing Sun Dance Ritual,” which was taken in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s. I used every element from that photo: colors, textures, and clothing design. I then translated those elements into my own point of view through a sketch and some quick notes of what I saw. I searched for the fabrics and, thankfully, became inspired by the fabrics I found. Once I acquired the fabrics, I sewed and draped the pieces together and worked off of my dress form. After that, I took what I’d made, along with a specked out sketch, to my pattern maker, where we then sat down and went over everything from start to finish. But from there…it’s a complete mystery! Sometimes the piece ends up entirely different than the original vision. But I love that lost connection that sometimes happens in fashion.

5./ Are there advantages of being based in the west coast vs. the east coast as a label?

Weather!!! I actually love the cold. haha. At least, in my opinion, I think the West coast has more positives than negatives. Los Angeles is perfect for me. I feel like I’m just more naturally inspired from the LA landscape. But, the cultural landscape of LA, as rich and diverse as it is, also happens to posses quite a dark side, which, due to my darker interests, happens to be the perspective of LA I’m so inspired by. This idea ties into my strong belief in the psychology of art, to be more specific, the subconscious and unconscious process of creativity. For example, by surrounding myself with darker interests, Music, art, etc., I’ve developed a somewhat unconsciously dark workflow. This darkness I’ve chosen to encapsulate myself in has, in turn, allowed me to produce a darker product. Also, not to be flippant or anything, but, being that I live and work in the Skid Row sector of Downtown LA, I continually find myself inspired by the homeless population—and, for many reasons. Mainly, the homeless in LA have cultivated a look that serves both form and function: they throw on every piece of clothing they own, and, more often than not, it actually looks good—un-intentionally, of course. Being surrounded by that demographic happens to be extremely motivating to me. Some people may find it depressing and dispiriting, but it only makes me want to succeed even more. It's not NY, it's not Paris. It's Downtown LA, and it’s a different world over here. I call it the “Golden Hell Hole”.

6./ Dark imagery and music seems to be a recurrent theme in fashion, could you tell me what separates you from the other brands that has a similar vibe?

Yes, this is very true: music plays a huge role in the fashion world; it sets a mood and a tone. But, for me, Black Metal and the Industrial sound is where I get most of my inspiration. It’s what feeds me. I grew up listening to Punk and Metal, so that’s where I get my momentum. However, I don’t design “punk rock” clothing…I live it! ha. Goth is something else. Some people like to label me as “Goth,” but that’s because they assume that since I do a lot of dark pieces that I must be Goth. But, my dark inspiration and colors don’t fit into just one category- it’s apparent in so many other styles, forms, shapes, and lines. I don’t want/need to be pigeon holed.

7./ If I have a limited budget to purchase one item, which item in Odyn Vovk's collection from F/W 09 is a crucial "must have" and why is it mandatory?

Haha. Don’t sacrifice one piece. Starve for six weeks to afford a leather piece! I would recommend the reversed terry hoodie coming for fall, perfect fit, comfy, and the hood is gigantic. Perfect for sleeping on planes, or a bench in Central Park, or under a car in the Golden Hell Hole, just pull it over your face.

8./ Economy—that seems to be on everyone's mind these days, how does an indie designer like yourself stay afloat during this rough economic climate? Is it still possible to be a creative designer without limitations or do you have to rethink what sells vs. what doesn't?

It’s definitely affecting me in some ways. I’m not reacting like most are, so its not affecting me as much. Though, the US has been affecting me the most. Stores closing, canceling orders, not buying too deep into the collection, etc… People are being very cautious and a bit more conservative over here. But, It definitely doesn’t change the way I design and express my creativity. I do think more about materials now and how to bring costs down to make it more accessible, but that’s about it. I also jumped into the game at the worst economic time, and it has been only going up for me. So things haven’t been as bad for me as it has been for a lot of others. I’ve been going full force and haven’t looked back, I keep looking forward and everything happens the way it’s going to happen and I don’t think you can change that.

9./ How would describe your feelings/process about doing your first runway show? Did it meet your expectations? What are your plans for future shows to come...

YES! The first show was everything I expected, and exactly the way I wanted it to be. Fortunately with the help of John Tan and Ryan Turner things really happened. Without them I couldn’t have done it. All of the models were great, Rie and her make-up team did an amazing job, Billy Keith and his Hair team were awesome. Everybody was really into helping me out and there wasn’t any bullshit going around; except for the model scuffle during rehearsal, haha. Future plans for the next show will be a surprise this coming September!

10./ Any hints about what the next collection would be like?

Its still going to be along the lines of the previous collections. Just new fresh designs, fabrics, and fabrications. More Odyn Vovk.

11. Bonus question: What's your moto in life?

C.M. RUIZ - POSTER GOD

The Blackbird Designer Sale poster was created by Carlos Ruiz, an international poster art genius who lives in Seattle. We were truly thrilled to collaborate with Carlos. He's radness!
Here's some info on Carlos:
C.M. Ruiz (http://www.gigposters.com/designer/85786_C.m._Ruiz.html) never went to art school. In fact, he openly admits that he never studied graphic design techniques, doesn't know a thing about computer design programs, and doesn't even own a computer. With a good eye for composition and a bit of intuition, Ruiz often designs posters while riding the bus and completes layouts within an a few hours using sharpies, collaged images, and copy machines. His black & white and two-color posters are simple in the sense that they are bold and raw—pixilated and hand-drawn, they have an organic edge that is rarely seen in the work of contemporary designers. Having recently co-founded Real Fake Press in the basement of an old house in Seattle, Ruiz hopes to lead a resurgence of DIY, lo-fi aesthetic through silk-screening and analog design. When he's not designing a poster or drawing in his sketchbook, you'll likely find Ruiz shamelessly leeching off his friends, listening to garage-punk records, and drinking his coffee black.

He has done posters for: Spoon, Los Campesinos! No Age, Times New Viking, Black Lips, Crystal Castles, Davila 666, Wavves, Crystal Stilts, Yeasayer, Dead Ghosts, Daytrotter, Gigposters, Hardly Art, Douchemaster, Floridas Dying, Don't Stop Believin' and loads more!

And... he just got a shout in vice mag. for his 7" sleeve design for uk band Deep Sht

DIET BUTCHER SLIM SKIN WRAP BRACELET

Diet Butcher Slim Skin's mid-summer 2009 collection has arrived in the shop and included with it is this very cool brass/leather combination wrap bracelet. As with a lot of DBSS's jewelry, this is made in collaboration with the Japanese jewelry brand Garden of Eden and comes in a beautiful bag made from a very weathered and aged-looking parchment paper. Due to the length of the item itself, it can really have a number of uses; in particular it works nicely as a necklace or other decorative accessory.

CHARLES LEO GEBHARDT IV "Unfaithful"

Before leaving from Seattle for his journeys with experimental theatre group Missoula Oblongata (click here for information on that), Leo spent time putting the finishing touches on an EP tntitled "Unfaithful." The project is finally complete and has been released by GGNLZA Records, a local lo-fi label run by Trent Coahran, the mind behind a handful of bands and occurrences in the Seattle underground scene. The album art was designed by Shannon Perry (of the band Katherine Hepburn's Voice) and is hand-silkscreened and numbered in an addition of 200.

Click here to go to Leo's MySpace for a sampling of his music.

These CD EPs are $10 and available in-store right now. If you are interested in ordering one by mail order, please e-mail or call (866 500-2524).

DEADLIEST BALLARD

Stolen from MyBallard.com. They are always on the case.

"Take a tour of the Sea Star, one of the boats from Discovery’s “Deadliest Catch” that has just returned to Fishermen’s Terminal. The boat is at dock 9, and it’s open for public tours. Check out what it’s like being on a Bering Sea crab boat and hear stories from the fishermen you may know from the show. When we were there, Captain Phil and other crew members were talking with fans. We’re told that Captain Sig Hansen comes by every once in awhile, too. Even though the Sea Star is no longer in front of the camera, the boat and its crew helps with the filming of the show and works as the “chase boat.” The tour is $10 for adults and $7.50 for kids." -My Ballard

CONGRATULATIONS! IT'S A WOLF!

With taxidermy, I-beams from the World Trade Center and plenty of heart, the Odyn Vovk Emporium is born. This space is intended to function as a showroom, design studio and by appointment store. To us, it is where our friend Austin works and the perfect setting for his innovative, thoughtful and well made designs. It's been an epic year for AX and OV. Congratulations.
