CRITERION COLLECTION DVDs NOW AVAILABLE

"Since 1984, the Criterion Collection, a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films, has been dedicated to gathering the greatest films from around the world and publishing them in editions that offer the highest technical quality and award-winning, original supplements. Over the years, as we moved from laserdisc to DVD, Blu-ray disc, and online streaming, we’ve seen a lot of things change, but one thing has remained constant: our commitment to publishing the defining moments of cinema for a wider and wider audience. The foundation of the collection is the work of such masters of cinema as Renoir, Godard, Kurosawa, Cocteau, Fellini, Bergman, Tarkovsky, Hitchcock, Fuller, Lean, Kubrick, Lang, Sturges, Dreyer, Eisenstein, Ozu, Sirk, Buñuel, Powell and Pressburger. Each film is presented uncut, in its original aspect ratio, as its maker intended it to be seen. Every time we start work on a film, we track down the best available film elements in the world, use state-of-the-art telecine equipment and a select few colorists capable of meeting our rigorous standards, then take time during the film-to-video digital transfer to create the most pristine possible image and sound. Whenever possible, we work with directors and cinematographers to ensure that the look of our releases does justice to their intentions. Our supplements enable viewers to appreciate Criterion films in context, through audio commentaries by filmmakers and scholars, restored director’s cuts, deleted scenes, documentaries, shooting scripts, early shorts, and storyboards. To date, more than 150 filmmakers have made our library of Director Approved DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and laserdiscs the most significant archive of contemporary filmmaking available to the home viewer." - The Criterion Collection Mission Statement

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger
SYNOPSIS: The passions and pitfalls of a lifetime in the military are dramatized in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s magnificent epic, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. The film follows the exploits of pristine British soldier Clive Candy (Roger Livesey) as he battles to maintain his honor and proud gentlemanly conduct through romance, three wars, and a changing world. Vibrant and controversial, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp is at once a romantic portrait of a career soldier and a pointed investigation into the nature of aging, friendship, and obsolescence.

Days of Heaven (1978) by Terrence Malick
SYNOPSIS: One-of-a-kind filmmaker-philosopher Terrence Malick has created some of the most visually arresting films of the twentieth century, and his glorious period tragedy Days of Heaven, featuring Oscar-winning cinematography by Nestor Almendros, stands out among them. In 1910, a Chicago steelworker (Richard Gere) accidentally kills his supervisor, and he, his girlfriend (Brooke Adams), and his little sister (Linda Manz) flee to the Texas panhandle, where they find work harvesting wheat in the fields of a stoic farmer (Sam Shepard). A love triangle, a swarm of locusts, a hellish fire—Malick captures it all with dreamlike authenticity, creating a timeless American idyll that is also a gritty evocation of turn-of-the-century labor.

Ivan's Childhood (1962) by Andrei Tarkovsky
SYNOPSIS: The debut feature from the great Andrei Tarkovsky, Ivan's Childhood is an evocative, poetic journey through the shadows and shards of one boy’s war-torn youth. Moving back and forth between the traumatic realities of WWII and the serene moments of family life before the conflict began, Tarkovsky's film remains one of the most jarring and unforgettable depictions of the impact of violence on children in wartime.

High and Low (1963) by Akira Kurosawa
SYNOPSIS: Toshiro Mifune is unforgettable as Kingo Gondo, a wealthy industrialist whose family becomes the target of a cold-blooded kidnapper in Akira Kurosawa’s highly influential High and Low (Tengoku to jigoku). Adapting Ed McBain’s detective novel King’s Ransom, Kurosawa moves effortlessly from compelling race-against-time thriller to exacting social commentary, creating a penetrating portrait of contemporary Japanese society. Criterion is proud to present High and Low in an all-new high-definition digital transfer.

Nanook of the North (1922) by Robert Flaherty
SYNOPSIS: Robert Flaherty’s classic film tells the story of Inuit hunter Nanook and his family as they struggle to survive in the harsh conditions of Canada’s Hudson Bay region. Enormously popular when released in 1922, Nanook of the North is a cinematic milestone that continues to enchant audiences. Criterion is proud to present the original director’s cut, restored to the proper frame rate and tinted according to Flaherty’s personal print.

La Strada (1954) by Federico Fellini
SYNOPSIS: There has never been a face quite like that of Giulietta Masina. Her husband, the legendary Federico Fellini, directs her as Gelsomina in La strada, the film that launched them both to international stardom. Gelsomina is sold by her mother into the employ of Zampanò (Anthony Quinn), a brutal strongman in a traveling circus. When Zampanò encounters an old rival in highwire artist the Fool (Richard Basehart), his fury is provoked to its breaking point. With La strada, Fellini left behind the familiar signposts of Italian neorealism for a poetic fable of love and cruelty, evoking brilliant performances and winning the hearts of audiences and critics worldwide. The Criterion Collection is proud to present La strada, winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1956.

Rififi (1955) by Jules Dassin
SYNOPSIS: After making such American noir classics as The Naked City and Brute Force, blacklisted director Jules Dassin went to Paris and embarked on his masterpiece: a twisting, turning tale of four ex-cons who hatch one last glorious heist in the City of Lights. At once naturalistic and expressionistic, this melange of suspense, brutality, and dark humor was an international hit and earned Dassin the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

Carnival of Souls (1962) by Herk Harvey
SYNOPSIS: Herk Harvey’s macabre masterpiece gained a cult following through late night television and has been bootlegged for years. Made by industrial filmmakers on a modest budget, Carnival of Souls was intended to have the “look of a Bergman” and “feel of a Cocteau,” and succeeds with its strikingly used locations and spooky organ score. Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss) survives a drag race in a rural Kansas town, then takes a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City. En route, she becomes haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her to an abandoned lakeside pavilion. Criterion is proud to present the ultimate special edition of this eerily effective B-movie classic that continues to inspire filmmakers today.

SANTARCHY & TITANIUM SPORKESTRA IN BALLARD

HAZLEWOOD JEAN by BLACKBIRD IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER

Our popular Hazlewood Jean is back in stock with full size runs!

This run of the jeans are made in the same great USA factory from the same USA-made Cone Mills denim and details, but this time around we took our customers' feedback and slightly tweaked the fit to make it better than ever. The jeans remain a universal "fits anyone" slim cut as before so fans of the original, worry not. We are also pleased to announce that we have lowered the price from before.

The Hazlewood Jean was inspired by our Ballard neighborhood bar Hazlewood (think Lee Hazlewood) and its owner Drew Church. A few years ago, Drew created a Blackbird-inspired cocktail which contains squid ink and remains a staple drink to-date. Hazlewood is about the size of a postage stamp and generally where you will find the Blackbird gang and our favorite customers sipping old-timey spirits.

Blackbird - Hazlewood Jean
in raw dark blue indigo
DETAILS: MADE IN U.S.A., 5-Pocket jean, raw Cone Mills denim in extra dark indigo, dirty dark brown/gold stitching, all black unbranded hardware, black leather label hand-stamped by Blackbird goons, extra tough belt loops, chain-stitched hem in varied lengths
sizes: 28-36 (32 and 34 lengths)
sizing recommendation: Fits true to size. Size down if you prefer a slimmer fit.

The Blackbird Hazlewood Jean is available at Blackbird, the Fieldhouse, and online via BlackbirdBallard.com.

LIMITED EDITION: "BLACK COFFEE IN BED" DECK CHUKKA SET by BLACKBIRD

This year we were able to work directly with Quoddy to design a limited edition custom boot for Blackbird.  This deck chukka is unlike any other on the market.  Firstly, they are made from a tough nubuck leather coated with a tar-like wax (dry to the touch), resulting in a beautiful stark black texture.  Instead of the standard nickel hardware and natural stitching our boot has black hardware and black stitching, and also comes with two sets of laces; contrasting natural leather with deep chocolate edges and standard black leather.

If you are not familiar with Quoddy shoes, they are all made by hand in Maine using moccasin construction where the leather wraps under the foot bed instead of over.  This makes them extremely comfortable and long lasting.  We are big fans.

So instead of simply selling the boots alone, we had some fun putting our Quoddys together with our favorite Blackbird items in a bushel sized wood storage basket in which we named Black Coffee in Bed after the Squeeze song from the 80s.  We added a 1lb bag of whole bean Blackbird Coffee roasted by Caffe Vita, a porcelain double walled thermal Bird Boy tumbler, and our new Bird Boy recycled notebook by ReBinder.  The set is a $340 value for $280.  You get the boots and the rest for free.  Happy Holidays!

There's a stain on my notebook
Where your coffee cup was
And there's ash in the pages
Now I've got myself lost
I was writing to tell you
That my feelings tonight
Are a stain on my notebook
That rings your goodbye

Now she's gone
And I'm back on the beat
A stain on my notebook
Says nothing to me
Now she's gone
And I'm out with a friend
With lips full of passion
and coffee in bed

With the way that you left me
I can hardly contain
The hurt and the anger
And the joy of the pain
Now knowing I am single
There'll be fire in my eyes
And a stain on my notebook
For a new love tonight

Now she's gone
And I'm back on the beat
A stain on my notebook
Says nothing to me
Now she's gone
And I'm out with a friend
With lips full of passion
And coffee in bed

Now she's gone
And I'm out with a friend
With lips full of passion
And coffee in bed

From lips without passion
To the lips with a kiss
There's nothing of your love
That I'll ever miss
The stain on my notebook
Remains all that's left
Of the memory of late nights
and coffee in bed
Of the memory of late nights
And coffee in bed

Now she's gone
And I'm back on the beat
A stain on my notebook
Says nothing to me
Now she's gone
And I'm out with a friend
With lips full of passion
And coffee in bed

Ballard Bee Company was established a little over a year ago by Corky Luster with the goal of urban pollination through various hives set up throughout Seattle. Naturally, with so many hives, an abundance of honey has been produced and Ballard Bee Company has begun marketing the locally produced product.

BLACKBIRD PEWTER FLASKS

(from Wikipedia's entry on Hip flasks)

Since the invention of the hip flask in the 18th century, pewter has been perhaps the most popular material choice for liquid storage. It is known for excellent conducting of temperatures and does not change the flavor of the contents over time. It is also great for engraving, making it an easily customizable gift. In more recent years many manufacturers have tended towards stainless steel as a cheaper alternative, but there are still legions of people dedicated to the art of pewter casting and its use for flasks. For more than you ever wanted to know about pewter, check out The Worshipful Company of Pewterers and The Pewter Society.

Blackbird pewter flasks are made in Sheffield, England.
