Ryuta's Welt (Ryuta's World) - Part 1

Konnichiwa. My name is Ryuta aka "Du-tah", a Tokyo-based artist/hobo. I've been in Seattle for three years and now working for Blackbird/The Field House as Vintage Buyer and Merchandiser.

As you all know, when winter comes and little creatures hibernate, we humans have an opportunity to stay warm too by playing with layers to create lovely outfits only found this time of year. I have styled two outfits that consist of my perspective and analysis of winter layers for The Field House's mannequins.

Men's outfit includes: vintage Eddie Bauer shirt, vintage bow-tie, RRL Long Sleeve Crew, Filson Jac Shirt, RRL Beacon Jacket, Filson Mackinaw Wool Vest, and RRL Officer's Field Chino.

Women's outfit includes: Cosmic Wonder Light Source Round Collar Shirt, vintage bandana, Filson (mens) Wool Western Vest, vintage women's jacket, and Woolrich Knicker Shorts.

As far as my inspiration goes, a mixture of qualities or styles often unifies my visual aesthetic, meaning that I appreciate outfits that give me different impressions or associations, rather than ones that give me a single impression. "Style" is merely a limited notion that is created, integrated and followed by groups of people. I would rather combine diverse qualities or styles to indicate a sense of a whole new "world", just like combining different materials and tools to create a unique painting. One time, my pal looked at my outfit and asked me if I was a grandma or hippie, and that certainly made my day. Those outfits in the photos, however, are styled with my personal aesthetic and energy, particularly for this blog.

Some may wonder why I chose that swankily lovely bow-tie for that hunting/working outfit, but the reason why is simply because hunters or outside-workers can wear a bow-tie. Regardless of whether or not you are ready to chop some logs, adding "mismatching" or "out-of-place" quality of the right kind to your outfit can be an adventurous pleasure. Others may wonder why that granny vintage jacket with the brooch is put over her hobo-looking outfit. One of the most precious things about granny items is their intricate details and delicacy. It is almost my natural reflect to add that quality to random outfits for their intentional imbalance and playfulness.

I hope you guys had enjoyed your few minutes with me. The mannequins are shown at The Field House, so please come by. It is always my delight to come across and create playful outfits. I would like to attempt to post more in the future.

Danke schön. 有り難う。

Ryuta Iwashita.

THE FIELD HOUSE: FREE CLASS THIS SUNDAY

HAND SPINNING FOR FUN AND FIBER
DECEMBER 13TH - 4PM

Do you love the feel of luxury yarn? Are you intrigued by the array of beautiful handmade items available and wish you knew how to create them yourself? Hand Spinning for Fun and Fiber will get you started creating and designing your own yarn using simple practices that have been around for thousands of years. Discover the soothing and addictive (in a good way!) craft of hand spinning.

Participants will gain resources about spinning, receive basic instruction on how to get started, familiarize themselves with different types of fiber and their origins, and try spinning with a drop spindle!

This class will be taught by Amy Hale, a fiber artist that received her B.A. in Fine and Applied Arts. She has over 20 years experience as an educator and Director of informal education programming for children and adults.

We are super excited to have her at The Field House for this hands on workshop. Please join us.

Classes are on a first come basis but you can drop by the store early on Sunday (on your way to the market and such) and secure your place on a list. Maximum class size is 15 and classes last 15 - 60 minutes and occur every Sunday at 4pm. Please check the blog for weekly details or be sure to stop in and join The Field House mailing list if you would like to be notified via email of all upcoming classes. If you have a class you would like to see offered or a class you would like to teach, please drop by or email us at thefieldhouse@blackbirdballard.com.

Birgitta Closing - BIG SALE!!!

As a change in business plan, Blackbird is closing Birgitta, its women's store immediately. A small selection of women’s brands will be integrated into the main floor at Blackbird and the new store, The Field House.

Almost one year ago Blackbird decided to diversify and broaden its reach in the Seattle retail market. Blackbird had been selling menswear to women and also had a successful ongoing women’s rack in Blackbird. Women’s clothing seemed to be the natural next step. After almost a year, it was realized that the other Blackbird businesses were more successful and took far less effort. Closing Birgitta is not easy but we think you’ll be excited about our new projects to come.

The space where Birgitta was will be converted into a private personal shopping studio, and will potentially be used for shop-in-shop/pop-up-shops.

H1N1 or BUST: TYLER JOHNSON ALIVE AND WELL IN SEATTLE

Once again Adam Sinding and his Le 21eme Arrondisement fashion blog has captured Tyler Johnson at his finest. This day he had just returned from a European tour promoting Revival, a fixed gear film in which Mr. Johnson steals the show. When Tyler was about to depart, he was experiencing the tail end of H1N1 and we were all wishing a safe and healthful journey on the poor boy. After a slight collision with a car in London he was smart and decided to spend an extended amount of time relaxing in Paris where he visited the Lanvin and Balenciaga flagship stores to recharged his fashion designer batteries. WELCOME HOME TYLER!

THE FIELD HOUSE: REMINDER OF FREE CLASS TOMORROW

DON'T FORGET OUR EXCITING CLASS TOMORROW AT THE FIELD HOUSE TITLED: DE-STRESS BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS USING RANTING AND MONOLOGUE TECHNIQUES!

This workshop will use improvisation techniques (don't worry you don't have to perform or act) to rid you of some of the stress that comes with this time of year. Through physical and verbal exercises the stress demon will be exorcised. It will also teach some monologue techniques to be utilized during any season when the soap-box calls.

Classes are offered every Sunday at 4Pm and are on first come basis. Please click here for full description and details of this week's class.

A VISIT TO NAM JUNE PAIK ART CENTER, SUWON, SOUTH KOREA

Tucked away just south of Seoul is the somewhat newly opened Nam June Paik Art Center, a very large and beautiful museum dedicated to the grandfather of video art, Nam June Paik. Living abroad, from Japan to Germany to U.S., Paik became quickly associate of the main fluxus and otherwise experimental art figures, including John Cage, La Monte Young, Joseph Beuys, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Hermann Nitsch, and countless others. Since his purchase of Sony's first portable video recorder, Paik made history with his experimental video work; from straight shooting to manipulation of video signals using magnets and other means. His art was presented as various forms of sculptures and physical creations, recorded videos, installations, happenings, and other performance art.

The Nam June Paik Art Center has a great collection of all of his mediums, as well as occasional exhibitions of like-minded artists and performers. Admission is free, as are the guided tours available in both Korean and English.

"The architect for Nam June Paik Art Center was selected among 430 participants in an international competition endorsed by the International Union of Artists (UIA) in 2003. The prize winning entry by Kirsten Schemel, a young German architect, who was commissioned together with Marina Stankovic in KSMS Schemel Stankovic Architects (Berlin) to design the building shown [above]. Characteristic of the museum is its screen facade consisting of several layers of reflective and partly printed glass." [from http://njp.kr/ff_eng.html]

Both the building itself and the surrounding area are worthy of exploration and investigation. In fact, as signs behind the museum point out, while excavating for the museum, several ancient artifacts were discovered.

And inside the building; sculptures, robots, writings, paintings, memorabilia, photographs, videos, and everything else you can imagine. One particularly good quote by the notorious Hermann Nitsch is displayed, explaining Paik's insistence on basically "hopping in" and getting chest-deep in blood and guts during one of Nitsch's controversial "Aktions." Alongside the quote is video of one of Nitsch's performances shown in vibrant color; aside from perhaps being there in-person, there is not much else like seeing such a large and crystal-clear viewing of his performances.

The museum is easily accessible by bus from downtown Seoul. With free admission and a cheap, short bus ride, even those not completely interested in this sort of experimental art should find appreciation in the chance to get out of Seoul for a day. Find full directions on the homepage.

GIFT IDEA #6: THE WORKAHOLIC WORLD TRAVELER

So, your big brother has always been a hard worker. Dude got into the toughest schools, graduated Summa Cum Amazing, got a good job, and continues to work like a fiend for every promotion and pay raise because he's good at what he does and he's driven like nobody's business. His apartment, clothes, and life all reflect this, and it's cool if you don't get that. He's a freak. He's also so busy he doesn't have much time to spend on himself.

Around the holidays, it's your job as a family member to chill him out and recharge him for the day after the festivities when he'll be back on the job again at the crack of dawn. If you can send him out into the harsh world of business and international travel with some rest and a few vital, well designed, usable items that suit his lifestyle and interests while keeping things streamlined, you've seriously one-upped your mom who continues to buy him those awful catalog sweaters from wherever. Here are a few of our suggestions for the man:

A.P.C.'S BONNET RAYE FEATURED ON GQ.COM'S WINTER'S BEST KNIT HATS LIST + A.P.C. COLD WEATHER ACCESSORIES

GQ.com recently came out with a list of their pics for the best knit caps of the season. Wouldn't you know it: A.P.C.'s simple, well-made basics wound up smack dab in the middle of things. Check out the original post here and scroll down to see details on the listmaking camel wool beanie and more cold-weather accessories from A.P.C:

A.P.C. - 3CAD00 Bonnet Raye
in beige/black (top) and grey/black
DETAILS: 100% camel wool striped knit beanie. There's nothing like a ratty, ill-fitting beanie to throw off a guy's winter look. Good news is, this simple, comfy, and sharp looking bold striped tuque is all you need to keep your dome warm and your style firmly in line. Go with the standard grey and black combo or warm things up a skosh with the more unexpected beige and black stripes. Trés cool.
$90

shop

A.P.C. - 3MD098 Gants
in grey/black
DETAILS: 100% merino wool gloves in grey and black heather. With its decidedly gothy twist on the classic knit gloves that Grandma used to knit, this pair of gloves' texture and black and gray heathered coloring definitely has something to add to your winter wardrobe choices. Pull them on with block colors and pattern to add another fun element and a little extra warmth to your well-considered winter looks.
$80

shop

A.P.C. - 3MD097 Gants
in anthracite
DETAILS: 68% wool, 29% cashmere, 3% nylon gloves in speckled grayish black. Softer than their all wool cousins and featuring an irregular speckled knit pattern, these gloves are sophisticated without being presumptuous and interesting without being goofy. Wear them with a wool work jacket, jeans, and a thick scarf or dress them up with a wool or cashmere suit and topcoat. Their off-kilter pattern will add a dash of the unexpected to any ensemble.

A.P.C. - 1M0206 Casquette
in blue/maroon
DETAILS: 75% wool, 15% nylon, 10% polyester hunting cap with 100% polyester fleece lining and 81% acrylic, 19% polyester faux fur ear flaps in blue, black, and rust. This punked up riff on the woodsman's go-to winter hat has a black YKK zippered stash pocket above the left eyebrow, a gray blue shoelace chinstrap tie, and contrasting drab brown faux fur flap lining. It looks like it's by far the best garage sale find ever, but it's made to A.P.C.'s standards so you know it'll wear better than the standard Good Will throwaway will. Enjoy looking like a cross between the king of all Gypsies and Kurt Cobain's ghost this winter.

GIFT IDEA #5: UPGRADING WITH UNCLE BILL

You know what your Uncle Bill is: a hilarious, football-loving, big loud guy with a receding hairline and a bit of a belly who sometimes embarrasses himself at family functions by making inappropriate off-the-cuff statements and belching right behind Grandma. What you don't know is what Uncle Bill wants and needs. If we may make a few pertinent suggestions...

First and foremost, Uncle Bill is the kind of guy who works hard and appreciates food and coffee. Ask yourself, would he tear through a Tuna gift set? Can he appreciate a coffee thermos with a lifetime guarantee? You know the answers to these questions.

Uncle Bill's type is also a guy who shuns shopping excursions of any kind. This makes him primed for a bunch of basic clothing and accessory upgrades. Take a look at his belt - it may be time to replace the one he got his Junior year of high school. Do his socks have holes in them? Does he have a decent shirt, and if so, does it have buttons or is it just a T-shirt that he's only worn three times since its last wash? Does he lose or break his glasses all the time? Maybe he needs a case that'll stand up to his constant and abuse.

Ask yourself some solid questions about your Uncle Bill. Then consider the following options:

Island Trollers - 3 Piece Albacore Tuna Gift Set
DETAILS: This gift set includes three 7 oz cans of Whidbey Island Troll caught Albacore. Each Albacore tuna is troll caught one at a time then bled and frozen at sea for freshness. Island Trollers hand trims and raw packs all cans, cooking them only once, preserving the natural Omega 3 oils. Once you've tried their canned sashimi grade albacore, you'll understand why our customers keep coming back for more.

DIET BUTCHER SLIM SKIN FINAL FW2009 SHIPMENT

The final shipment from DBSS's FW2009 collection is on its way. It includes some simple odds and ends, including a lovely giant leather bag/backpack and a couple other sweater styles. Of particular note, though, is that it will also include our order from the very small mid-winter collection. As this part of the collection is shown outside of the typical schedule for Japanese exhibitions, it typically ends up being made available exclusively to Japanese retailers, with a lucky few international retailers being around to see its showing. Being a collection strictly for winter, the focus is primarily on warmth. From this collection we have picked up some great sweaters and knits; two of which are shown below. Keep an eye out for this shipment to arrive and please e-mail with any inquiries.

Please note that, due to this mid-season collection being intended for the Japanese market, only the smallest two sizes (1 and 2) are produced.

Diet Butcher Slim Skin - D94C407 Hooded Riders Knit
in black
DETAILS: Terribly comfy 100% wool t-cloth knit hoodie with a diagonal zip closure reminiscent of a riders jacket. The fabric itself has a beautiful knit texture and, creating a subtle "X" with the zipper is a diagonal line sewn against the bias. The hood is double layered with jacquard detailing.
sizes: 1, 2

Diet Butcher Slim Skin - D94K127 Kid Mohair Sweater
in black
DETAILS: Totally grungy unisex sweater made from a super soft 63% kid mohair/30% nylon/7% wool blend. The black portion has a slightly looser weave than the rest but due to the nature of the fabric, it really doesn't surrender any of its warmth. Looks great worn oversized or slim; in the case of the above picture, the sampled size 2 was a bit roomy.
sizes: 1, 2

GIFT IDEA #4: GOT YOUR SKATE PUNK LITTLE BROTHER COVERED

Everybody's got a cousin or a nephew or a little brother who just turned fifteen and acts so bored and world-weary that you wonder if he's into anything at all. Invariably you'll find out that the grumpy, sarcastic little blank starer actually does enjoy a handful of things: skating, hanging out, listening to music, etc. This holiday season, you may as well cater to the kid's interests.

You know the following things: He needs a beanie to hang low over his eyes when he comes to school "tired." He can always use a new punk rock T-shirt and a slouchy cardigan. His jeans need to be comfy and skate-friendly, and while you're at it you can upgrade him to a real belt - the shoe lace he's been using is all stretched out. Lastly, get him a backpack that he can draw all over with Sharpie, and throw a new pair of headphones at him. All of a sudden, he's like, "Wow, dude. You're way cooler than the rest of this lame family, huh!" Look who just got a new best friend on Facebook. Nice.

COMME DES GARCONS EMBOSSED REPTILE WALLETS ON HYPEBEAST

Hypebeast.com recently posted about Comme des Garcons' line of reptile embossed leather goods. We've long been a fan of CdG's beautiful, butter soft Japanese-designed/Spanish-made wallets. They're definitely worth taking a look at if, you haven't already. Thanks for the reminder, Hypebeast.

From Hypebeast: The popular line of COMME des GARCONS wallets sees some different interpretations here with a mixed embossed reptile style. Three different wallets include a contrasting usage of both reptile skin and a pebble leather style. The usual CdG zippered touch is seen in gold as a further highlight.

Now that you're all fed up for the rest of the season, it's time to focus on what the upcoming holiday season is all about: giving (no, seriously, you guys).

Each year we like to make a daily suggestion to help our customers track down great gift ideas for everybody on their list, and this year we're gonna be sure to cover everybody - from your cool guy brother-in-law to your candy maniac aunt to your super-goth cousin to your hard-to-shop-for Dad (we've got experience with and ideas for all of the above - trust us).

To start, we're going with the ultimate holiday gift: slippers. Everybody likes something comfy to slip their feet into, and the Uggs that Grandma's been sending for the last few seasons are played out (sorry, Gran, but somebody's gotta come clean). Quoddy of Maine has been around for a century, so they've got comfy down to a science. We give you Blackbird Holiday Gift Idea #1: Quoddy 104 Grizzly Mocs.

Quoddy - 104 Grizzly Moc
in peanut
DETAILS: Leather moccasins with collar style lace system, and thick Chromepak leather sole. Equipped with a layer of memory foam underneath the footbed, fully lined with deerskin, and featuring an outdoor-friendly soft leather sole that will mold to your foot shape, these luxurious handmade moccasins wrap your feet in comfort and look great while they're doing it. Wear them with any casual pair of jeans or pants this fall, and next spring wear them barefoot with shorts. Note: These mocs run a little big, and because they're so open on top we'd recommend sizing down half a size. Also, Quoddy's soles are replaceable, extending the life and value of each pair. Handmade in Maine, USA.

APRIL in AUTUMN - JEANS WHEN YOU NEED THEM

Oh April 77... if you could only have a giant warehouse of jeans down the street from me to sell all year round to anyone that wants that perfect jean for the perfect price. But no... you are in France and that is far.

Please take this moment to welcome back April 77 to the Blackbird denim assortment and know that they always sell out fast every 6 months when we get them.

APRIL 77 - JOEY COLORDRIVE
in black cloudness
DETAILS: 98% cotton, 2% elastane unisex five pocket skinny jeans with signature guitar pick holder at right-hand front pocket, and tarnished copper colored rivets, button, and zip fly in faded black. This super skinny's pegged cut and low rise sets the standard for rock club kids worldwide - Paris to London to soggy Seattle, WA. They fit right in with a shrunken silhouette's tiny blazer and button up, but this shape's potential contributions to your wardrobe don't stop there. We love playing their narrowness against chunky boots or sneakers and a ratty loose-fitting top.
sizes: 27 - 34
$186.00

APRIL 77 - Dictator
in new morning dust
DETAILS: 100% cotton slim straight leg five pocket jeans with signature guitar pick holder at right-hand front pocket, and tarnished copper colored rivets and button fly in vintage washed indigo. This faded straight leg comes with an authentic looking wash that gives them a worry free worn in look without the years of effort. Slouch them around your hips and wear them with a loosely tucked oxford, work boots, and a wool jacket for a country boy vibe or do them up with a pair of streamlined sneakers and a heavy wool sweater.
sizes: 26 - 34
$186.00

APRIL 77 - Joey Drugstore
in garage
DETAILS: 98% cotton, 2% elastane unisex five pocket skinny jeans with signature guitar pick holder at right-hand front pocket, and tarnished copper colored rivets, button, and zip fly in dusty washed indigo. April 77's authentic wash makes this pair of super-skinny jeans look like they've been yours for years even though you just took them off the rack, and the look is nothing if not versatile. Wear them with a drab M-65 jacket or a brown leather bomber, a simple button-up, and a long knit scarf for the hip kid look that's not going to have every other show-goer in line rolling their eyes - leave that to the kid in the Day Glo sneakers and neon keffiyeh.
sizes: 29 - 33

OOPS! MISSED ONE: QUODDY 1003S DECK BOOTS

Whoah! We unpacked those Quoddy boxes fast and - whoops! - we completely skipped over these awesome boots. Better late than never though, right? Get 'em while they're hot, guys:
