ALICE NEEL - "MEN ONLY" PORTRAIT SHOW

“Eleven portraits make up Men Only, a solo showing of Philadelphia-born painter Alice Neel on view through July 29, 2011 at London’s Victoria Miro Gallery. Neel’s range as a portraitist is the thrust of the exhibition, her subjects shown displaying attitudes hinting at the ironic and the erotic, and most everything in between. In its concise nature, Men Only proves why Neel (born in 1900) is considered amongst the foremost portrait painters of her time.” curated

Born near Philadelphia in 1900, Alice Neel was the foremost American portraitist and one of the most engaging painters of her times. Engaging deep relationships with her subjects of all kinds, Neel evoked a childlike honesty in her work while digging deep into the minds of her canvas embedded works. The balance of color and light in all of her works brought to mind some of the pieces from the Spring and Summer offering at Blackbird. Enjoy.
