ARTIST TO ARTIST: CREEP VS. MAX ERNST

Creep was founded in Osaka, Japan by Kiyofumi Awai in 1997. In 2008, Hiroshi Awai, Kiyofumi's brother based in Toronto Canada, took over as Creep's men's creative director. Hiroshi combines beautiful textiles with innovative Japanese design with his passion for the simple beauty of functional American workwear. Awai describes his line as "complexity within simplicity."

Forest and Sun, 1931

Max Ernst (1891 - 1976) was a German painter, sculptor, a leading advocate of irrationality in art, and an originator of the Automatism movement of Surrealism. His youthful interests were psychiatry and philosophy, but he abandoned his studies at the University of Bonn for painting. In 1925 Ernst developed a surrealist drawing technique called frottage (Fr. "rubbing".) Ernst was inspired by an ancient wooden floor where the grain of the planks had been accentuated by many years of scrubbing. The patterns of the graining suggested strange images to him. He captured these by laying sheets of paper on the floor and then rubbing over them with a soft pencil. The results suggest mysterious forests peopled with bird-like creatures and Ernst published a collection of these drawings in 1926 titled Histoire Naturelle (natural history).
