Nathaniel Richards (1972- , USA)
Nathaniel spent his early childhood in Forest Falls, a small mountain
community in southern California. He was encouraged early on by his
parents to explore different avenues of self expression, and was
highly influenced by the work of his father, which included leaded
glass windows and sculptural furniture. He became interested in
skateboarding when he was in junior high school and devoted all his
time to it. Professional skateboarders from that era like Mark
Gonzalez and Neil Blender made up the next round of early influences,
with their deck graphics and paint pen drawings on griptape. After
moving to Maui at the age of seventeen, graduating high school and
then moving to Oahu to attend the University of Hawaii, Nathaniel
began to slowly develop an intersest in fine art. He began to
explore art in the classroom. However, this setting proved
uninteresting, and he focused on social services in school.
Independent study lead to interest in artists like Paul Klee,
Ferdinand Leger and Jean-Michel Basquiat. A trip to Barcelona several
years ago helped hone an interest in modern street artists like Kid
Acne, Cha and Pez. He has recently exhibited work in Art Maui, 28th
Annual Juried Exhibition, Schaefer International Gallery (2006).
Nathaniel recently moved to Ballard, Washington, where he paints and
works.
