In 1933, America was falling deeper into the great depression and the U.S. was facing all-time unemployment rates. If you had seven pennies, you could buy an entire loaf of bread. This feels very similar to the state of things today except we take pennies for granted and most American’s are looking for something to do with the pennies in their pockets. There is even a debate of whether or not America should permanently do away with the penny - an ironic conversation considering the current economic climate. President Obama even recently proclaimed "I will seriously consider eliminating the penny as long as we find another place for Lincoln to land."
