3/9/12 -- Rick Owen's Magic Mountain

We all know Rick Owens as an amazing and iconoclastic clothing designer. But what some of you may not know, is that he is also a world famous furniture designer. For those of you who find yourself in Switzerland any time soon, you can see this furniture for yourself in an exhibition entitled "Magic Mountain" at the Chesa Planta museum in Samedan, Switzerland (near St. Mortiz). For more info, check out this write up for Rick Owens in NY Magazine. And for a perusal of our current Rick Owens collection, click here.

RICK OWENS - MAN SKIRTS AND MITT ROMNEY

To the faithful this blog preaches to, Rick Owens is a designer who needs no introduction. With many current designers playing safe and traditional within an unpredictable economy and industry, Owens, ever trend-less and never one to worry about others' opinions, ventures forth this Spring/Summer season with a grouping of menswear that features body conscious man skirts and elongated, dress-like tunics.

When the Associated Press asked about this latest collection's penchant for male skirts and dresses in a recent interview, the ever-quotable Rick Owens quickly shot back with, "It's a niche, but I like the niche." (read here) While Scott Schuman, better known as the brain behind the Sartorialist, makes the obvious yet interesting observation in New York Magazine of how no current political figure "would ever be caught wearing Rick Owens." (read here)

To be sure, Owens' "un-traditional" take on men's fashion might be bewildering to the less-forward thinking press and public, but to us, it's poetry in fabric and design. We've recently received the Rick Owens delivery for this season so now's the time to grab some of the viciously unique style that Rick Owens is known for. For a full selection, go here...

RICK OWENS SPRING/SUMMER 2012: "NASKA"

The name of the Spring/ Summer 2012 Rick Owens collection is Naska. The collection should be hitting our shops soon, so we thought that we'd introduce it with a couple quick tidbits. What's better than coming home from church on Sunday to watch the Rick Owens SS12 runway video and check out some backstage photos? Maybe skipping church to watch the Rick Owens runway video...

PS: We're not getting this, but we think it and the model's smile are awesome

WHY IS THIS STILL HERE?: RICK OWENS MUTANT LAB COAT

Sometimes here at Blackbird we find ourselves asking one another, "Why is this still here?". Nothing could be more to the point about the Rick Owens Mutant Lab Coat. Let us revisit this monster item in the hopes of finding it its proper new home.

The coat is from his spring 2011 collection, which he loosely described as "Monastic couture". We like the image that creates with the Mutant Lab Coat. Wearing it, you become someone else. Like a monk from a vow of silence sect, like a member of the cult of Rick Owens, or like your very own secret society of yourself, clad in one of the finest and original trench coat variations available today. The style blends military pocket details, classic trench coat style, as well as other-worldly, futuristic pleating and buttoning that create fin-like details reminiscent of 1950s cars and 1980s Japanese clothing design. The fit is close in some areas and more spacious in others, illustrating the designer's fascination and mastery of the subtleties of positive and negative space. Inside the back of the coat are two straps so that you can carry the coat on your shoulder like a bag. The whole effect is part Agent Cooper from Twin Peaks (the "Black Lodge" Cooper, that is), part man in black from the X-Files, and part completely your own. And at half off the original retail price, we'd need a whole team of F.B.I. agents to investigate the explanation.

These are sure to disappear soon. Click here to abduct one now...

ARTIST TO ARTIST: RICK OWENS VS. STEPHEN GAMMELL

Born and raised in Southern California, Rick Owens studied pattern making at Otis College of Art and Design before dropping out to work for local companies. In 1994, he established his own label selling exclusively to a Los Angeles boutique before expanding to well known department stores. In 2002 he won the CFDA's Perry Ellis Award for Emerging Talent. He draws inspiration from old black and white Hollywood movies and is known for his architectural jackets, asymmetrical dresses, long and clingy t-shirts and embellished outerwear. Rick Owens once said "I try to make clothes the way Lou Reed does music, with minimal chord changes, and direct. It is sweet but kind of creepy. It's about giving everything I make a worn, softened feeling. It's about elegance being tinged with a bit of the barbaric, the sloppiness of something dragging and the luxury of not caring." Rick Owens currently lives and works in Paris.

Stephen Gammell (b. February 10, 1943) is an American illustrator of children's books. Gammell grew up in Iowa where his father, an art editor for a major magazine, brought home periodicals that gave Stephen early artistic inspiration. His parents also supplied him with lots of pencils, paper, and encouragement. He is self-taught. He started his career with commercial freelance work, before becoming interested in children's book illustration. He is particularly well-known for the surreal, unsettling illustrations he provided for Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series of horror short stories, still a favorite in adolescent fiction. Stephen and his wife, Linda, a photographer, live in St. Paul, Minnesota. He works daily in his studio, located over a restaurant.
