NEW AT BLACKBIRD - MARK MORRISROE

Mark Morrisroe was an extremely prolific performance artist and photographer within his short lifetime. He founded Dirt Magazine, performed in drag as Sweet Raspberry (a character of his own creation) and pushed the early limits of x-ray, polaroid, and zerox as art. By the time of his death in 1989, he had turned a dark and tragic childhood and adolescence (he was born to a drug-addicted mother and began hustling at 15) into a prolific and stellar body of work.

This publication is illustrated with more than 500 images, some of which have never been seen before, and is accompanied by newly commissioned essays and an extensive biography. For anyone interested in the maverick fringes of contemporary art, the creations brought forth from it, and the artists that dwell there, this book is a definitive biography of an underground genius who wrestled his demons and won.

NEW AT BLACKBIRD - 60 FOTOS BY LASZLO MOHOLY-NAGY

Hungarian-born painter, photographer, and Bauhaus professor Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, who helped steer the Bauhaus in its later years towards a more design and technologically integrated direction, developed theories of art, photography, and teaching in what he would come to call "the New Vision". Originally published in 1930, Moholy-Nagy's "60 Fotos" provides the reader with the author's perspective of not only constructivist theory in photography but also with a milestone document of what this "New Vision" was and would develop from.

Culling examples of Moholy-Nagy's work with photogram, conceptual portraiture and negative printing, collage art, and thematic use of landscapes and human anatomy, the book not only illustrates this art movement's photographic aesthetic, but also demonstrates Moholy-Nagy's original and groundbreaking work.

The Books on Books series is a project that takes rare and out-of-print photography books and makes them readily available again. Each book presents page for page the entire work of an original manuscript that was either too rare or too expensive to be studied widely. The secrets these books hold and have finally been allowed to disseminate to a wider audience show the full breadth of the history of photography and some of the more momentous occasions of its development.
