RRL denim is made from selvedge denim that is woven on vintage narrow shuttle looms in Okayama, Japan. Okayama is legendary for its production of the the worlds’s highest quality and most authentic narrow shuttle loom denim. The denim woven on these narrow looms is from 28 to 31 inches wide, roughly half the width of modern projectile looms. These narrow looms also weave with low-tension, resulting in a fabric that is rich with texture and authentic imperfections. Fabric woven on narrow shuttle looms is finished with a self-edge, or selvedge, which prevents the ends of the fabric from fraying. In the early 20th century, denim mills would use specific thread colors in the selvedge to identify each fabric. When authentic side-graded jean patterns are cut out of the denim, this selvedge is visible in the out-seam.
Cotton yarns are rope-dyed in the highest quality red-cast indigo. This method passes the yarns through multiple dye-baths, resulting in a deep indigo color. The indigo dye only penetrates the outside of the yarns, allowing the yarns and fabric to fade down to a natural cotton color with wear and washing. Double RL core denim is dyed by the hightest quality indigo dyeing facility in Japan, which has been working with traditional indigo dyeing methods for more than 100 years.
