Siki Im Backstage Runway Show Images + Interview for Models.com
Siki Im has always had an air of maverick and daring about his designs. This S/S 2012 collection, entitled "The Topography of Globalization" only serves to up the ante of not only his reputation, but also his output.
As a result, Im has garnered a huge amount of attention in the the past two months about his past and present work in addition to who he is and where he draws his inspiration from. SIKI IM STREET SNAP ON NYC FASHION BLOG AN UNKNOWN QUANTITY
Our good friend Siki Im was recently captured by New York fashion blogger Wataru Bob Shimosato of An Unknown Quantity. Shimosato mentions Siki as being one of his favorite New York designers and we are right there with him! We love how he mixes those architectural volumes with a casual pair of Air Jordans. SIKI IM SPRING/SUMMER 2012 "TOPOGRAPHY OF GLOBALIZATION"
The name of Siki Im's Spring/Summer 2012 collection is "Topography of Globalization". Many themes are touched upon in the design and functionality of this collection that have to do with cultures from around the globe and an aesthetic that blends the fashion and functionality of many different countries and climates.

FEATURED BRAND: SIKI IM
One of the more looked forward to collections every season comes from Siki Im. Quite singular in his design approach and aesthetic, Siki Im is always a crowd pleasing combination of style, functionality, personal statement, fun, and comfort. And without fail, the collections invariably boast a signature darkness of theme.
When starting to design the Spring/Summer 2012 collection, Siki Im was very inspired by the topic of globalization and further more its political implication. As he was working, the geopolitical climate started to change and rather quickly evolve into what we now know as the Arab Spring. This inspired him to see his collection as a reflection of the motions and amplification in the Middle East.
The silhouettes, details, and fabrics of Spring/Summer 2012 propose an intersection of these cultures. The Middle East referenced in volume, draping, wrapping, knotting of garments thus integrated with the notions of the West which can be seen in the constructed hand-tailored and unconstructed blazers, t-shirts, and especially in the jeans.

DETAILS: The V-Neck Shirt, along with the rest of the Siki Im Spring 2012, is the ultimate in loungy-elegance. Made from the lightest weight military twill cotton imaginable, this close fitting woven does a mash up with a pajama top and what a black tuxedo shirt may evolve into given twenty years or so.

DETAILS: A sarong that cinches with a long black cord into various shapes and functions. Among the looks are the simple scarf (cinching fully and double wrapping) as well as across one shoulder and dropping across the body and around the hip. Constructed of 100% light Japanese cotton twill and made in the U.S.A.

DETAILS: This boat necked slightly oversized tee shirt shows a particularly rad rusted gold discharge print throughout the body. There is a seam in the center of the back that accentuates the print's randomness (one side of the seam is completely different than the other). Signature Siki Im triangle pocket on left front of the tee is subtle and singular. The bottom of the tee is rounded and side seams are slightly slanted. 100% cotton, made in the U.S.A.

DETAILS: Ninjas need workout clothes too. This dropped crotch jogging pant is perfectly suited for circuit training as it is for simply standing and looking completely yourself. Waist cinches with extra long cord and the back waistband rises an extra inch. The inseam is about 19" as is the rise. Leg tapers beautifully. 100% cotton, made in the U.S.A.

DETAILS: This 100% cashmere wool sweater is made in the U.S.A. and combines a military edge with a luxuriously soft feel. A single cargo pocket on the center left of the front and large rectangle elbow patches lend a slight sinister commando feel. The left hand seam along the body boldly ends with a slit (that measures 6" in front and 5" in back) that is minutely cinched to accentuate its presence.

DETAILS: Extreme comfort and extreme style like a ninja in a completely functional custom-made zoot suit trouser. The dropped cargo pant is oversized in the hips and legs while the waist is cinched with elastic and off-center drawstring and the leg tapers to elastic pant cuffs. Two cargo pockets grasp at the hip. Inseam measures 23.5" and the rise is closer to 30". Button fly. Wear with army boots and people will cross the street as you advance.

DETAILS: Combining elements of formal civilian and military outerwear, this jacket is full of quietly loud details. Wear it in its full length form buttoned to the neck or to the waist or with the upper portion tied around the waist. Cuff the pant legs in warmer weather or put a sweater over the top half during the colder seasons.
SIKI IM: CARGO SWEATER
This 100% cashmere black military-infused sweater is ultra soft, perfectly fitted, wearable with absolutely anything, and very limited in quantity. The slightly larger neck opening looks great over a tee shirt or a button up or with nothing underneath. Elbow patches are subtle but insure extra protection and longer life. One of the pieces from the Spring 2012 Siki Im collection we know we'd end up wearing everyday is the Dropped Jogging Pant. Extreme comfort meets extreme style in this slouched out fleecy trouser. The legs taper to accentuate the roomy top portion and the off set cord cinch is super long. Military-esque flap back pocket lends even more unique character. A casual feel with a severe cool design equals a piece so essential you'll even want to sleep in it.

We're super excited about the new Siki Im shipment that we just got in. One of the standout pieces is this amazing take on one of the most basic workwear garments there is: the jumpsuit. Based on the one-piece all-purpose work suit with origins that probably date back to Medieval times or before, this sleek jumper is perfect for work, play, or neither. It features much of the iconic details Siki Im is known for - the internal shoulder straps, the pocket square folded over pocket details on the front and back, as well as subtle labeling and pleated touches.

DETAILS: This 100% cotton, made in the U.S.A. black jumpsuit is a minimum three outfits in one. Wear it in its full length form buttoned to the neck or to the waist or with the upper portion tied around the waist. Cuff the pant legs in warmer weather or put a sweater over the top half during the colder seasons. It features inside arm straps so you can sling it over your arm or secure your arms inside while wearing. Inseam measures 30" from cuff to crotch seam but it has the standard drop crotch of any jumpsuit which might add up to 6" to the actual inseam.
ARTIST TO ARTIST: SIKI IM VS LOUISE NEVELSON
Siki Im was born and raised in Cologne, Germany. Having worked as an architect in various cities around the world, Siki Im moved to New York City in 2001 where he worked for the progressive architecture firm, Architectonics. Numerous projects later he decided to take a break from architecture, and move onto fashion design. Siki Im was the Senior Designer for Karl Lagerfeld, and Helmut Lang. After years of designing for fashion houses he thought that it was a good time to utilize his knowledge, as well as experiences in architecture, furniture, graphics, art, and music, manifesting it all into fabrics and shapes. This seasons collection is entitled "Silent Thunderbird Prayer" and was heavily influenced and partially created by Native American artists and weavers resulting in a collection with a geometric point of view and mixed styles of business, casual, martial arts, and the old west.
Louise Nevelson: Sky Cathedral 1958
Louise Nevelson was an American sculptor known for her monumental, monochromatic, wooden wall pieces and outdoor sculptures. Usually created out of wood, her sculptures appear puzzle-like, with multiple intricately cut pieces placed into wall sculptures or independently standing pieces, often 3-D. Nevelson credited Pablo Picasso for "giving us the cube" that served as the groundwork for her cubist-style sculpture. She found strong influence in Picasso and Hofmann's cubist ideals, describing the Cubist movement as "one of the greatest awarenesses that the human mind has ever come to." She also found influence in Native American and Mayan art, dreams, the cosmos and archetypes.

Pointed collar with five button hidden placket closure. Two deep single-welt front pockets with long unfastened flaps. Back rain flap, spine seam, and single vent with hidden button fasten. Two-piece sleeves with scooped cuffs that hang longer over the top of the hands than the palm. Three interior pockets and taped interior seamwork throughout. VEST: High collar with button down hood and storm flap that fastens on the right side of the face. Four-button asymmetrical hidden placket closure. Single double-welt chest pocket with buttoning triangular flap closure on the lefthand side. Double spine seam, and fully taped interior seamwork. If you haven't been introduced to Siki Im, take a moment to meet one another. This seasons collection is entitled "Silent Thunderbird Prayer" and was heavily influenced and partially created by Native American artists and weavers. Maria Martinez, Tahnibaa Naataanii and her mother Sarah Natani were influencers and collaborators resulting in a collection with a geometric point of view and mixed styles of business, casual, martial arts, and the old west.

Siki Im's Fall/Winter 2011 collection comes from silence. In his fourth season, Siki Im rediscovered a tranquil, and somber spirituality in returning to our roots, to Mother Earth, after having been inspired by the works of Native American pottery artist, Maria Martinez.
Layers of wools, cashmeres, Swiss felts, and waxed cottons protect you from the elements as winter draws near. Colors reflect the shortening of the daylight, quickly moving into night with shades of soil, and deep indigo, and setting further into black.
SIKI IM - HEAVY TEXTURED WOOL BOMBER

DETAILS: 100% boiled wool bomber jacket from Siki Im's fall/winter 2011 collection. Features a high neck ribbed collar with five button hidden placket closure. Placket dead-ends before the bottom hem line to create a uniquely geometric cut out detail that adds to the jacket's structural complexity. Two large front pockets with single hidden button closure. Cell phone pocket located on the left bicep closes with two hidden buttons and can hold other little things as well. Sleeves are sleek but a bit roomy due to the slight bat-wing shape; sleeves feature double layered ribbed cuffs that cover the top of the hands but not the palms allowinig maximum coverage and movement. The back features careful panelling which creates a geometric Y-shaped pattern which is mimicked on the interior lining.
Inside, you'll find a strap sewn from the shoulder down to the armpit on both sides that allows you to wear the jacket like a backpack when it gets too toasty to wear and you dont have free arms to carry it with.

DETAILS: 100% boiled wool tunic from Siki Im's fall/winter 2011 collection. Featuring a V-neck collar created by the wrapping front section, and a single double-welt front pocket with triangular buttoning flap on the lefthand side. Bottom section utilizes clever cross-hatching seamwork to create a completely different texture from the rest of the tunic; wraps most of the way around the garment to create a uniquely-shaped back section. Bottom hem hangs low in the front and scoops up in the back for additional structured complexity. Two piece 3/4 sleeves add a touch of playfulness and help ventilate. Complete the look with Siki Im's cashmere Fin Cardigan.
