BLACKBIRD OUTFITS: DRESS LIKE TOM WAITS

Tom Waits is a living legend. His incredibly prolific career has not only yielded numerous must have albums (take your pick) and suprise collaborations (Keith Richards on Rain Dogs and his most recent, Bad As Me) but also hit cover versions (Rod Stewart doing "Downtown Train", Bruce Springsteen doing "Jersey Girl" and, um, Scarlett Johannson doing an entire cover album of his songs). As if this weren't bad ass enough, the man has the uncanny ability to change his style and constantly evolve to where his early stuff sounds like it could have been done by someone else (though his 10 pack a day smoking habit voice is clearly the same).

Throughout his entire career Waits has always maintained a modicum of singular decorum. Pork pie hats, winklepickers, drainpipe trousers, engineer boots, worn out t-shirts, leather and denim can all be associated with various eras of his. Most recently, he's found himself in a denim, t-shirt, and engineer boots phase. Not only current with men's fashion trends, it's also a look he totally owns.

DETAILS: This is an authentic Levi's "Big E" trucker jacket. The same one you would have worn back in the 60's or early 70's, at the side of the road with your thumb outstretched, at Altamont waiting for darkness to descend and for the Stones to take the stage, or in the back seat of your best friend's car skipping school and sipping at a warm budweiser tall boy can. Made in the U.S.A.

Blackbird Vintage - Harley Davidson Engineer Boots
in black

DETAILS: One of the most bad ass boots out there is the iconic engineer boot. This style of boot started out as work wear and quickly became the boot of choice for bikers the world over. For bike use, they are typically equipped with steel toes and high back heels. This pair of Harley Davidson engineer boots, most likely from the 1970s or 80s has neither, meaning they are a bit better suited to normal everyday wear (especially with the low heel).

As anyone who owns a pair of these awesome all-American jeans can attest to, the attention they're getting is well deserved.

Here's a selection of all three of their iconic, extremely well-built jeans. One thing to remember is that due to the denim's raw unwashed state, you can expect around 1-3% shrinkage when the denim is soaked in water or washed. They will also stretch between a half and one-and-a-half sizes depending on how snug they are to begin with. We recommend sizing down one size from your normal pant size for the best fit.

BACK IN BLACK: TELLASON JEANS

All Tellason Jeans are made with 100% cotton blue line selvedge White Oak Cone denim. In denim terms, arguably, this is as good as it gets. While there are other types of top notch denim out there, the good-old-made-in-the-U.S.A. Cone Mills is our favorite. It represents, like we do, not only the smaller merchant who is concerned solely with providing the best customer service and highest quality products, but also at a price that gives you your money's worth in addition to leaving enough in your wallet to cover rent and food for the rest of the month.

Put simply, you will love these jeans. They make three fits: the Ladbroke Grove (slim), the John Graham Mellor (standard), and the Ankara (straight leg). They will stretch a size after a bit of wearing. Other details about this foot to ass jean include a leather label made by Tanner Goods from Portland, OR, back pockets that are lined with canvas (no more holes back there), as well as a hidden red tab on the inside of the back pocket that reads "legal". Heh. Brute strength jeans with a sense of humor. We like that.

Back in Black are three styles from our friends at Tellason. Real men's denim with a hidden secret. Seen above are a pair of well worn Tellason jeans with 2 rinses, one tiny detail that you may notice is a weird wear mark right next to the seaming on the back pocket. Hidden inside the back pocket of each pair of Tellason jeans is a small red tag, there must be a story there, but you'll have to find out yourself.

TELLASON: TWO NEW JEAN FITS AVAILABLE IN-STORE & ONLINE

Glorious day! A big shipment from San Francisco-based jeans operation Tellason has arrived and made its way to both the store and online. For this season Tellason is offering two brand new fits: Ankara (straight leg) and Ladbroke Grove (slim tapered.) As before, the denim comes from Cone Mills' White Oak plant in Greensboro, North Carolina and production happens in San Francisco, California.
