ARTIST TO ARTIST: APC VS. CARL SANDBURG

A.P.C. is a French ready-to-wear brand, founded in 1988 by the Tunisian born Designer Jean Touitou. A.P.C. stands for 'Atelier de Production et de Creation' and is known for its clean-cut and minimalist nature, as well as simple, chic, and modern design, with military over-tones. The brand makes great use of denim and high quality fabrics. The quality of Touitou's fabrics are matched by a similar dedication to ensuring his designs fit appropriately.

Carl Sandburg (1878 - 1967) was an American poet, historian, novelist, and folklorist. Sandburg tried many occupations and fought in the Spanish-American War before moving to Chicago in 1913, where he worked in journalism. He won recognition in 1914 with poems, including “Chicago,” perhaps his best-known, published in Poetry magazine. His Whitman-esque free verse eulogizing American workers appeared in such volumes as Smoke and Steel (1920) and The People, Yes (1936). What follows are two early poems by Sandburg, from his book Cornhuskers.

I cried over beautiful things knowing no beautiful thing lasts.

The field of cornflower yellow is a scarf at the neck of the copper sunburned woman, the mother of the year, the taker of seeds.

The northwest wind comes and the yellow is torn full of holes, new beautiful things come in the first spit of snow on the northwest wind, and the old things go, not one lasts.

- Autumn Movement, 1918

THIN sheets of blue smoke among white slabs … near the shingle mill … winter morning.
Falling of a dry leaf might be heard … circular steel tears through a log.
Slope of woodland … brown … soft … tinge of blue such as pansy eyes.
Farther, field fires … funnel of yellow smoke … spellings of other yellow in corn stubble.
Bobsled on a down-hill road … February snow mud … horses steaming … Oscar the driver sings ragtime under a spot of red seen a mile … the red wool yarn of Oscar’s stocking cap is seen from the shingle mill to the ridge of hemlock and cedar.

- Hemlock and Cedar, 1918
