Class Description:
Amy will be gracing us with her gardening skills and knowledge for the second time, and giving us all the information we need, so we can have a successful garden of our own! Amy is just finishing up her book, Urban Pantry: Tips and Recipes for a Thrifty, Sustainable and Seasonal Kitchen, so not only will she give us tips on how to grow the most amazing tomatoes, but she can also give us new ideas for how to use them, and all the other wonderful things we'll have growing in our own yard.

Do not miss out on this class! It is the perfect point in the season to prepare that place in your yard to grow your own goodness. Last Summer, my roommates and I put together a garden space, and there is rarely a thing more satisfying than watching a field of dirt produce the most beautiful and delicious fruits and vegetables...a mystery that gives us life to our kitchen again and again.
And there is so much to learn!

RSVP by emailing thefieldhouse@blackbirdballard.com, or call the shop 206 297 6093. Limited space available...

SUNDAY 11TH, 3pm: MATINEE MOVIE @ THE FIELD HOUSE

Showing the film: Alone in the Wilderness; a documentary.

Come celebrate the life of Dick Proenneke, as The Field House shows its first movie! Dick Proenneke retired at age 50 in 1967 and decided to build his own cabin on the shore of Twin Lakes. The first summer he scouted for the best cabin site, and cut and peeled the logs he would need for his cabin. Dick Proenneke returned the next summer to finish the cabin where he lived for over 30 years. Dick filmed his adventures, and Bob Swerer later turned the film into a video so we can all watch this amazing man build his cabin by hand.

This film is one you don't want to miss. We will be playing the film in the side room at 3 pm. Stop by Blackbird Candy Shoppe and grab some snacks, and snag a Coca Cola from our fridge at The Field House before the show.

Limited space, so RSVP now! thefieldhouse@blackbirdballard.com or call The Field House @ 206 297 6093

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
This first class will
be a general introduction to drinking, including how to mix a drink properly - and introducing the idea of building around a specific liquor, using the Classic Era as a modeling ground. Most classic drinks were modeled on Gin - given the Martini-ization of the past 10 years, it will be a familiar liquor to begin with. This class will show us how the original flavor profiles were much more complex and drier. Also, how basic pairings of flavors can be enhanced. This will provide a good opportunity to introduce a number of products that were core to Classic drinking but aren't used much today at all.

Space is limited, so RSVP now! 21yrs+ only. Here's to mixin' a good drink!!

TUESDAY 13th @ 6pm: STORM WEATHER SHANTY CHOIR from NORWAY: LIVE IN-STORE PERFORMANCE

Special Guest: Storm Weather Shanty Choir (listen: http://www.myspace.com/shantychoir

This is a real privilege for us at The Field House. All the way from Norway, the Storm Weather Shanty Choir will be playing a small set for us in our store, before they play at the Tractor that same night. They will be in Ballard playing the Nordic Heritage Museum the next day, the 14th. Storm Weather Shanty Choir consists of six singers and musicians with backgrounds ranging from rock, pop (guitar player from Magnet (N) and William Hut (N), Roald Kaldestad), metal and folk, and for credibility's sake, a sailor/shanty man who has sailed for many seasons aboard the tall ship SS Statsraad Lehmkuhl who also has a masters degree on shanties and sea-songs. We have been together for almost ten years, we claim to be one of the most curious live rock/folk acts in Norway and we always give extraordinary live shows, were songs from the seven seas get mixed from a-capella to full instrumentation, rock n roll style!

THE FIELD HOUSE (FREE) CLASSES: KNOT TIEING - JANUARY 31st

Impress your friends! Tie something to the top of your car that will actually stay on! Increase your chances of participating in Duck Dodge! Join us for a fun-filled hands-on hour of knot tying.

  • Overview of fancy knots for everything from monkey’s fists to baggywrinkles
  • Splicing and other advanced topics
  • Recommended reading, resources, and marlinespike lore
You'll learn foolproof techniques for tying loops, binding parcels, and securing loads, and we'll practice the essential knots, know what knot to use when, and learn the different kinds of rope, line, tools, and their properties.

Former students say:
“Knowing how to tie knots is like knowing how to drive stickshift.”
“Wow, I thought you were totally kidding about the upside-down under water part.”
“I’m glad I finally know how to tie a rolling hitch – my wife will be so impressed!”
