BACK IN BLACK: DIPTYQUE CANDLES

Diptyque scented candles are a fifty year old legend that delivers a unique mystique and luxurious aroma to those able to procure it. Two stellar examples of this painstaking craft of candle making that has helped make Diptyque known the world over are the Figuier and Chene candles that we have just had a restock of at The Field House. Stop by for a full array of the lavish world of Diptyque scented candles, not to mention their addictive and engaging scents and perfumes.

Diptyque began as a small boutique, founded by three friends and artists who shared a passion for creativity and design. In 1961, they opened a shop at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain to showcase their avant-garde fabric designs and decorative items from their travels. The trio offered colored candles to match their fabrics, adding perfumed wax, and soon their customers fell in love with the inimitable fragrances. Word traveled and their cachet grew. In 1963, they introduced the first Diptyque scented candle. In 1968, the first line of fragrances was launched. Today, the three Parisian artists are world-renowned purveyors of fragrance and scented candles, as well as personal care products.

CLOSER LOOK - CANNABIS CANDLE BY MALIN+GOETZ

All joking aside, the Cannabis Candle by Malin+Goetz is something special. This spicy, exotic clean-burner is a modern take on the "chypre" scent. Chypre is the name given to a family of fragrances that date back as far as the Roman Empire, and are known for their blending of citrus top notes with a woody base. Often, chypres incorporate floral notes and herbals, patchouli and musk, resulting in rich, dynamic and compelling fragrances.

The Cannabis Candle improves upon the classic chypre formula, bringing fig and pepper into the mix to spice things up a bit, while adding a layer of deep, sweet earthiness. In January we hosted Rebel & Mercury for the Northwest Indie Perfumers Circuit. As is customary for the Circuit, Nikki, the nose behind the line, put together a unique candle for us in honor of Blackbird. Rebel & Mercury - Blackbird

Nikki from Rebel & Mercury put this dark candle together for us. Finding a fine balance between the scents of vanilla and smoke, bridged together by tobacco, this is a perfect candle to burn alone in the evenings. Somewhere in between the scent of a fireplace, burning incense, and pipe smoke, without any of the dingy, sooty notes often associated with burnt objects, the vanilla takes the deep, hazy shades and builds them into something exotic and mysterious. Although this candle would function perfectly as something to be lit when having company, there's a certain presence to the aroma that does create a sense of being joined by a companion even when burning alone. 60 hour burn time. Editor's note: I am not a candle or fragrance kind of guy, but this smell is one of my absolute favorite new things. It fills the room with a piny fire smell that takes me back to the riverside camping trips I took as a kid. CIRE TRUDON - ODEUR DE LUNE

NOTES: Yes, you did read that correctly, amateur francophones of The Internet—this candle is the conjectural smell of the moon. Certainly the most polarizing of the Cire Trudon line, this bizarre scent isn't so scary once you know what's in it. Constituents include black coal, smoked wood, and a dusty metallic halo derived from substances reported in NASA's geological survey data conducted on the moon. Whimsical as it may seem, this candle is redolent of nights out by the campfire in the backyard, sleeping warmly in a sleeping bag and staring at the stars (and of course at our big old geosynchronous satellite in the sky.)
